Iona Keeps Niagara Winless in MAAC Play

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.-The Iona Gaels kept Niagara winless in MAAC play as the Purple Eagles' conference foes handed them a 16-7 loss at Mazella Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Eagles fall to 4-10 overall, to go along with their 0-4 mark in MAAC play, while Iona sees its record improve to 4-10, and pull even in league action, 2-2.

"Inconsistency and unforced errors got the best of us today," head coach Wendy Stone said. "The effort was there for sixty minutes, but we were unable to sustain a sense of urgency with the ball. We will look to be better next time out. "

Iona opened the game with two-straight scores from Casey Palmer and Jenna Stone, but Niagara's Fran Pollastro evened the game at two apiece with 21:42 remaining in the half. The Gaels responded with goals from Meghan Testoni and Kylie Gregory over a 40 second span to regain the two-goal lead at 18:52.

Paige Matecki brought the Purple Eagles back within one with 12:37 on the clock, scoring her sixth goal of the year. Danielle Maio evened the game for the second time at 7:15, but Iona ended the half with three unanswered goals to enter the halftime with a 7-4 advantage.

The host team kept the momentum rolling in the second scoring the first four goals of the half to build a commanding 11-4 lead. Maio cut the run short with her 20th goal of the season, but Iona responded with a 5-2 run in the final 12 minutes of play to pull out the victory. Matecki and Carrie-Jo Farrugia added the final two scores for the Purps.

Iona outshot the Purple Eagles, 39-23. Niagara goaltender Paige Sasser stopped 15 Iona shots on goal.

The Purple Eagles prepare for their final home contest of the season next Saturday, April 20 when Niagara hosts Manhattan during Senior Day.
