Two Thompsons Tally Ten to Lead No. 12 UAlbany by Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. Lyle and Ty Thompson combined for 13 points and No. 12 Albany outscored Vermont 16-6 in the second half to earn a 21-11 victory in America East action Saturday afternoon from Virtue Field. With the win, the Great Danes improve to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Vermont falls to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Graham Horvath paced the Catamounts with a team-high five points on four goals and one assist, and Drew Philie chipped in with four goals of his own. Freshman Blake Pendleton had three shots and tallied his first career goal in the second period.

Lyle Thompson led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists, and his cousin, Ty Thompson, added five goals and one assist to lead the Great Danes.

Blaze Riorden earned the win in goal for Albany after stopping 11 shots. Justin Rosenberg took the loss for the Catamounts despite making five saves.

Vermont outshot Albany 17-15 in the first half, and also held advantages in ground balls (18-17) and face-offs (6-5). The Great Danes turned it around in the second half, and at game's end held slight advantages in all three categories.

The Thompsons got the scoring started as both Lyle and Ty scored in the first six minutes of the first period to help Albany jump out to an early lead. Vermont answered with two straight goals from Philie and Tim Yager, to even the score at 2-2 with just over five minutes remaining in the frame.

John Maloney tallied the final score of the first with 3:43 remaining to give Albany a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.

Vermont opened the second frame with two straight scores from Horvath, with the assist on the first goal going to Mark D'Anthony.

Following two consecutive goals from Albany, Pendleton collected his first career goal off a feed from Nick Bartlett with just 48 seconds remaining to tie the score, 5-5, heading into halftime.

Albany outscored Vermont 7-2 in the third period, receiving a hat trick from Lyle Thompson and two scores from Matt Garziano. Philie tallied the Catamounts' only two goals of the frame, with the first goal, which was in a man-up situation, setup by a pass from Horvath.

Horvath netted the first goal of the final period to cut Vermont's deficit to 12-8 at the 14:04 mark. Albany then went on to score eight consecutive goals in a span of just under six minutes to push its lead to 20-8 with 6:35 remaining.

The Catamounts tallied three of the game's final four goals, but it wasn't enough, as Albany earned the 21-11 victory for their ninth win of the season.

The Catamounts head to Binghamton next Saturday (Apr. 20) for their final road game of the season against the Bearcats at 12:00 p.m.

The teams played an evenly matched first half. UAlbany got on the board first, scoring back-to-back goals to open up play, with Lyle netting an unassisted shot less than a minute into the game. Ty followed with his first of the day, a man-up score with an assist to Ryan Feuerstein at 9:34. Vermont responded with the next two tallies, but freshman John Maloney took an assist from Ty Thompson at 3:43 to give the Great Danes a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
