Whittam Saves 17 as Williams Downs Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Williams goalie Dan Whittam (Allendale, N.J.) made 17 saves and Evan Dedominicis (Greenville, Del.) had three goals and one assist as the Ephs took an 11-8 win over Colby in NESCAC lacrosse on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Williams moved to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Mules fell to 5-7 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Steven Kiesel (Excelsior, Minn.) finished with two goals, while Conor Roddy (Medfield, Mass.) and Colton Growney (Berwyn, Pa.) both had one goal and one assist. Will Stewart (South Salem, N.Y.), Tucker Dayton (San Francisco, Calif.), Mericos Rhodes (Seattle, Wash.), and Khary Dennis (Burlington, N.J.) also tallied for Williams.

Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) had two goals and four assists, while Chip Grossman (Charlottesville, Va.) had three goals to pace the Mules. John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) had a pair of goals, Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) dished three assists, and Derek Youngman (Cohasset, Mass.) had one goal.

Colby took two leads in the opening quarter at 1-0 when Grossman scored off an assist from McKillop, who later tallied on a man-up score from Deveau for a 2-1 lead. Dennis scored the first goal for the Ephs and Kiesel added an unassisted goal with 1:11 left in the quarter when his pass was deflected in the goal by a Colby defender.

The two teams combined for nine goals in a wild and long second quarter. The Mules took their third lead of the game when McKillop and Grossman had back-to-back goals. The Ephs, though, tied the game at 4-4 on scores by Drayton and Growney. Colby went up for the fourth and last time in the game when Jennings scored with 7:44 to play for a 5-4 lead.

Williams took the momentum right back just nine seconds later after winning the face-off. Dedominicis tied the game at 5-5 to help the Ephs go on a 5-1 scoring run to take control. Rhodes tallied unassisted with 4:28 to play and Stewart scored just 20 seconds later to put Williams up 7-5. Colby made it a 7-6 game at halftime when Youngman tallied from McKillop with 2:11 to the break.

Dedominicis scored the first two goals of the second half with 11:35 and 8:05 to play to put Williams up 9-6. Jennings scored from Ian Boldt (Millburn, N.J.) with just 29 seconds to play in the third quarter to get Colby to within two goals, but Kiesel scored a key goal with just 1.5 seconds to play for a 10-7 Williams lead after three.

Roddy scored in a man-up situation for Williams just 1:17 into the fourth quarter for an 11-7 margin. Grossman scored the final goal of the game with 1:41 to play.

Dayton had five ground balls for the Ephs, while Stephen Upton (Alexandria, Va.) and Ryan Hamilton (Ridgewood, N.J.) both had four. Zander Masucci (Far Hills, N.J.) and Mack Von Mehren (Bronxville, N.Y.) each had two caused turnovers.

Peter Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) and goalie Tyler Will (Woodbury, N.Y.) each had four ground balls and one caused turnover for Colby. Will also finished with eight saves.
