No. 7 Stevens Rolls to Empire 8 Win over Utica

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 13, 2013) No. 7 Stevens rolled to a 17-7 Empire 8 Conference victory at home against Utica on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. With the victory, Stevens is now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Empire 8. Ten different Ducks tallied at least one point in the win.

Senior Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led the way for Stevens with five goals and one assist for six points. Philippi kicked off the scoring onslaught in the match-up with his first goal just 1:44 into the first quarter and would post a hat trick within the first 7:45 of the opening frame. Philippi added four groundballs in the contest.

Between the three Philippi tallies, senior Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) picked up his first of four markers on the day to stake the Ducks to a 4-0 lead halfway through the first. He then put Stevens ahead, 5-0, on a pass from sophomore Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 2:44 to go on a man-up goal.

Utica finally got on the board with 1:51 left to wrap up the first period offense. The Pioneers would strike first in the second quarter to bring the contest to a 5-2 difference, but Stevens would score three of the next four goals to build an 8-3 advantage heading into halftime.

Freshman Alex Haubrich (Voorhees, N.J.) tallied his first career goal, unassisted, with 12:02 remaining in the second stanza for a 6-2 lead. After Utica netted its final goal of the first half four minutes later, Dorne took a pass from Philippi at the 4:08 mark and then freshman Griffin Rock (Bay Shore, N.J.) capitalized on a feed from Maroon with two minutes left.

Rock scooped up four groundballs in the game as well.

After the half, the Ducks blew the game wide open after taking a 9-3 edge in the first 2:13 of the third. Utica scratched another goal off with 7:37 on the clock but the Ducks would rip off four scores in a 1:35 span to balloon their lead out to 13-4 with 5:10 to go in the third period. The teams would trade the final two scores of the period and head into the fourth at a 14-5 difference.

Maroon netted three of the six third quarter goals, while Dorne, Philippi and freshman Zachary Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) all recorded one. Rock assisted on the first tally from Maroon and senior Brian Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.) assisted on the second.

In the fourth, senior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) picked up a man-up score, while freshman Anthony Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) posted the 10-score difference with 4:21 left in regulation to conclude the scoring.

Junior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) handed out one assist to go along with two groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore Brian Fahy (Eastchester, N.Y.) forced three turnovers and chipped in three groundballs.

The freshmen duo of Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) and Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) combined to win 16 of 24 faceoffs for Stevens. Incollingo went 10 for 12 and picked up a game-high seven groundballs.

Sophomore Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) stopped 10 shots in the victory and also had two groundballs. Deiner played all by 3:02 of the contest before being replaced by senior Ben Shaffer (Armonk, N.J.).

The shot distribution in the game was fairly close, with Stevens holding a 59-42 edge. Half of Utica's shot were taken in the second quarter. Stevens dominated possession with 45 groundballs to 26 for the Pioneers and won 18 of 26 faceoffs.

Stevens will head out for conference road games against Elmira College and Nazareth College on April 17 and 20 before wrapping up the regular season at home against Hartwick College and Ithaca College on the 24th and 27th.
