Castleton Dominates, Shuts Down Husson

Bangor, Maine Castleton put forth one of its most balanced scoring efforts of the season and the defense was stout, as the visitors came away with a hard-fought 15-3 win over Husson on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field.

Nine different players accounted for the 15 goals, led by senior Nohea King with four, as the Spartans improved to 9-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Eagles dropped to 4-7 overall and 3-1 in conference action with the loss.

It was a physical contest as the two team combined for 28 penalties, including 16 for Husson. However, the Castleton defense held the Eagles to 0 for 12 while a man down, and the offense converted three times while they were a man up.

Senior Spencer Hunt added a goal and two assists while classmate Sam Bailey recorded a hat trick and Will Stuhler added a pair of goals. Eric Horsfield played the first half in net and allowed two goals while making two saves, and Sam Polas made seven saves and gave up a single goal in 30 minutes.

Bailey opened the scoring just 12:13 into the contest and Stuhler made it 2-0 at 11:17. Mitch Heaps pulled Husson within one, but the Spartans scored three times in the final four minutes of the first for the 5-1 lead.

Green pushed the Castleton advantage to 6-1 just 30 seconds into the second and that started eight straight goals, the final of which by King at 1:53 for the 13-1 lead. The Eagles made it 13-2 with 56 seconds left, but Taylor Swarter scored with only eight seconds remaining for the 14-2 lead at the half.

Alex Denny scored 8:10 into the third and Heaps tallied the final goal of the game with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter.

John Hooper III was strong in net for Husson, stopping 19 shots while allowing 15 goals.

Castleton returns to action on Sunday for a 3:00 pm game against Maine Maritime.
