Seahawks Victorious on Senior Day vs. Frostburg State

St. Mary's City, Md. Senior attacker Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) put up eight points as St. Mary's snapped a three-game skid with a dominating 17-2 CAC victory over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon, making it a memorable afternoon for Shafer and her fellow seniors.

Today's win puts St. Mary's (6-9, 2-3 CAC) half-a-game behind Marymount (Va.) University for fourth in the CAC standings. The Seahawks will take on Marymount next Saturday, April 20 at 12:00 pm in the regular-season finale to determine who will have home field advantage in the first round of the 2013 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

Prior to the start of the contest, St. Mary's recognized its three seniors Shafer and midfielders Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) and Amelia Tenberg (Manchester, Md./Hereford). These seniors have helped the Seahawks to a 35-33 four-year record, including a 16-12 CAC mark. St. Mary's advanced to the CAC semifinals in 2010.

Frostburg State (5-7, 1-4 CAC) staked the first lead of the game at 27:36 as sophomore midfielder Jessica Jones (Linthicum, Md./North County) connected with senior midfielder Taylor Cassatt (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) for Jones' third goal of the season. St. Mary's responded with a 4-0 run to claim the lead for good with two goals each from Shafer and sophomore attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg). Senior midfielder Chelsea Feeney (Damascus, Md./Damascus) picked up her 14th of the season off a Cassatt assist to cut the lead to 4-2 at 18:44.

The Seahawks answered back with five straight to own a 9-2 halftime advantage. Shafer finished the afternoon with a hat trick and five assists while Bishop came up with four goals and an assist to pace the St. Mary's offense.

It was all St. Mary's in the second half as the Seahawk defense held Frostburg scoreless over the final 20 minutes while the offense powered through with eight unanswered goals.

St. Mary's outshot the Bobcats, 37-10, and edged them 11-9 in draw controls while posting a 28-24 margin in ground balls.

Cassatt led Frostburg with two assists as well as six ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers while senior goalkeeper Naomi Swann (Arbutus, Md./Lansdowne) made 13 saves with six ground balls.

Gray picked up five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers while sophomore defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) added four loose ball pickups and force three Bobcat turnovers.

Sophomore Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) notched two saves and the win in playing the first half while first-year Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) turned away one shot before sophomore Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) came in to make four stops and grab one ground ball.
