Southern Maine Downs Western Connecticut on Senior Day

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored a game high four goals as Southern Maine built a 8-4 lead in the first half and maintained the advantage throughout the second half to post an 11-7 victory over Western Connecticut in Little East Conference action on Senior Day at Hannaford Field Saturday afternoon.

The win stopped the Huskies' two-game losing skid and improved their record to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Colonials had their two-match win streak stopped to slide to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in LEC play.

Hamilton paced the Huskies with five points on his four goals and one assist. Senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) added three goals and two assists, and classmate Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) had two goals and an assist. Senior Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had the other two goals. Senior goalie Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made a season-high 18 saves in the USM cage.

For the Colonials, rookie Nate Wilson (Norwich, Conn.) led the way with three goals. Classmate John Foristall (Danbury, Conn.) added two goals while sophomore Anthony Nejame (Danbury, Conn.) dished out two assists. Freshman Billy Thomson (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Kevin Seery (East Lyme, Conn.) spilt the goaltending chores for the Colonials. Thomson had seven saves in the first half and was tagged with the loss. Serry played the second half and stopped two shots.

Western jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on scores by freshman Anthony Gruttadauria (Avon, Conn.) and Wilson before Hamilton got the Huskies on the board at 4:47. Foley and Baker scored before the end of the quarter to give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage after one period.

Southern Maine outscored Western 5-2 in the second quarter to build its 8-4 halftime margin. White scored an up goal in the opening minute to make it 4-2. Two minutes later, Foristall trimmed the lead to 4-3 with the first of his two goals in the quarter. White, Baker, Hamilton, and Baker again, scored as the Huskies opened the lead. Foristall got his second goal with four seconds left in the quarter.

Hamilton tallied the only goal of the third quarter to give the Huskies a five-goal edge heading into the final quarter.

Hamilton's fourth goal of the game in the third minute of the fourth quarter gave the Huskies their biggest lead at 10-4. Wilson scored twice in a span of 18 seconds to cut the deficit to 10-6 with 11:12 to play. Foley and Foster traded goals midway through the period to close out the scoring.

Southern Maine will host Plymouth State University for its final regular season home game on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). Western Connecticut will play at Salem State University on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
