Coker Dominates Lees-McRae in Conf. Carolinas Play

HARTSVILLE, S.C. Fourteen Coker players registered at least one point, as the Cobras dominated the Lees-McRae Bobcats to earn an 18-3 Conference Carolinas victory on Saturday (Apr. 13).

Lees-McRae found the back of the net first with a pair of goals in the first quarter, but Steven Zolezzi scored two goals in the final minute of the quarter to tie the game. The Bobcats took a 3-2 lead with a goal in the second, but that would be the last time Lees-McRae would be allowed to score as Coker rattled off 16 unanswered goals over the next two and half quarters.

Included in Coker's 18 goals were seven man-up tallies. As a team the Cobras fired 67 shots at the Bobcat cage and picked up 43 ground balls.

Keith LaClair and Steve Marciano both recorded hat tricks to lead the Cobra attack. Ryan Maurer, Adam Zinsmeister, Mike Martiello and Zolezzi each netted a pair of goals, while John Bretton, Joshua Taylor, Ryan Vento and Timothy Smith each scored a goal.

Maurer dished out a team leading five assists, while LaClair and Andy Campos handed out three assists each. Also handing out an assist were Shane Wilson, Mikey Mazzola, Deondre Parks, Marciano, Vento and Zolezzi.

Josh Masciarelli made 11 saves and allowed just three goals to earn the win in the net for the Cobras.

Coker closes out the season winning its last three games in row to finish with a record of 5-10.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Schuylor Dickerson (Crozet, Va.) scored his first collegiate goal to pace Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon, as Coker rallied from an early 3-2 deficit for an 18-3 victory over the Bobcats in Conference Carolinas play.

Coker (5-10, 1-5 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (0-15, 0-6 CC) by a 67-22 margin on the afternoon, including a 28-18 advantage in the first half, while winning 16 of 25 face-offs and converting each of their 17 clearing attempts. The Cobras posted 43 ground balls in the contest, as the Bobcats scooped up 18 grounders and converted 12 clears.

Dickerson, Jeff White (Middle Township, N.J.) and Kyle Judge (Hampstead, Md.) each found the back of the net for the Bobcats, as White scooped up a game-high seven ground balls. Ryan Harrison (Lake Mary, Fla.) made a career-high 26 saves between the pipes, while White and Dustin Barrow (Columbia, S.C.) won five and four face-offs, respectively.

Keith LaClair and Steve Marciano each scored a hat trick to lead the way for Coker, as Ryan Maurer added two goals and a game-high five assists. LaClair and Andy Campos both dished out three helpers, while Mike Martiello and Steven Zolezzi tallied two goals. Josh Smith scooped up seven ground balls and won 12 face-offs, while Josh Masciarelli made 11 saves between the pipes.

The Bobcats started off strong, taking an early 2-0 lead on a strike by Judge before Dickerson netted his first of the season, connecting on a pass from Dalton Lamb (Clemmons, N.C.) at the 6:01 mark. Coker would answer with a pair of Zolezzi goals, evening the tally at 2-2 with 19 seconds left in the first.

White countered quickly for Lees-McRae, giving the Bobcats a 3-2 advantage at the 11:56 mark of the second quarter before Coker responded, netting four goals in the final eight minutes of the period to take a 6-3 lead into the intermission.

The Cobras carried the momentum into the third, pushing the advantage to 10-3 with four strikes in the third quarter, before scoring a trio of man-up goals in the first four minutes of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Lees-McRae is expected to return 17 letter-winners from this year's squad, including rising seniors Judge and Nick Topichak (Weedsport, N.Y.).
