Fourth Quarter Separates Griffins from Mavericks

Lafayette Hill, Pa. (4/13/2013) In an intense ECC contest, Chestnut Hill overcame Mercy for a much-needed victory, 12-8. The Griffins held a narrow 4-3 halftime edge and scored the last goal of the third quarter to keep the contest tied, 7-7, heading to the final frame.

There, junior attack Michael Melnychenko (St. Catherines, Ontario) scored all three of his goals to ignite a 5-1 game-ending Griffin run. Senior midfielder Dennis Klusaritz Jr. (Slatington, Pa.) and junior midfielder Michael Landau (Lancaster, Pa.) also provided hat tricks in the victory.

With a 4-3 lead in hand at halftime, Chestnut Hill (5-5, 2-2) gained extra advantage for the second half when Mercy (7-4, 2-2) drew three simultaneous penalties with 17 seconds (0:17) remaining in the second quarter. The Griffins converted on the golden opportunity with Melnychenko locating freshman attack Michael Plaia (Hicksville, N.Y.) for a man-up goal just 25 seconds (14:35) into the second half, 5-3.

Unfortunately, the Mavericks netted then next three goals of the third quarter to take a 5-6 lead with 2:59 remaining in the period. Landau briefly tied the contest at 6-6, scoring off a feed from senior attack Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) at 1:32, but another exchange of scores in the final minute left the contest at 7-7 heading to the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Melnychenko put the competition to rest. He scored, unassisted, at 11:33, and again at 7:04, 10-7, after a goal from senior midfielder Junji Wiener (Houston, Texas) put the Griffins up 9-7. Two minutes later he scored his third goal when Klusaritz found him on a man-up opportunity to give the Griffins an 11-7 advantage. From there each side would score once more to settle the affair on a 12-8 final.

Sophomore attack Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) led the Mavericks with three goals, two assists, and four groundballs. Fitzpatrick also netted three goals, while providing an assist and a groundball. Freshman goalkeeper A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.) took the defeat (7-4) with five saves.

Along with his four-point performance, Melnychenko collected six ground balls to headline the Griffin effort. Sophomore midfielder Sean Johnsen (Toms River, N.J.) went 7 of 17 (41.2%) on the face-offs while also collecting three groundballs. Senior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.) earned the victory (5-5) with 17 saves.

The men's lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule next Saturday, April 20, with a 1:00 pm home contest against Dominican College (NY).
