Saint Michael's Keeps Win Streak Going at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - Ninth-ranked Saint Michael's tied a 26-year-old school record with its eighth straight victory on Wednesday, downing Franklin Pierce, 8-4, during Northeast-10 play at Sodexo Field. The Purple Knights are 9-2 overall while remaining one of two squads with a perfect league mark, standing 8-0. The Ravens are 4-7 and 3-6.

Saint Michael's last won eight straight between April 11 and May 2, 1987. Senior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) recorded three goals and two assists, moving into 10th in program history in career points (128) during his third season with the team to pass Mike Simonelli '96. Junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) added a hat trick.

Classmate Tim McDonald (Walpole Mass./Walpole) dished off two assists. Junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made 14 saves, and classmate Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) was 4 of 6 on face-offs. Sophomore Luke Solms (Bedford, N.H./Northfield Mount Hermon) had a career-high eight ground balls.

Sophomore Erik Kelly (Tewksbury, Mass./Bishop Guertin/Manhattan) scored twice for the Ravens, and classmate Don Denman (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) made 18 stops. Junior Eric Vincens (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) went 8 for 14 on face-offs.

After yielding a man-up goal 42 seconds into the game, the Purple Knights scored three times in a 4:42 stretch of the opening quarter, with Vanzo assisting senior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) before scoring once himself at 6:55. Antolino made it 3-1 1:10 later. The Raven scored another extra-man tally with five seconds left, but Vanzo countered at 12:24 of the second. The score stood 4-2 in favor of the visitors at halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Quenneville and Vanzo scored 34 seconds apart to make it 6-2 by 9:10 of the fourth before Kelly tallied at 8:30. However, Antolino scored at 7:49 and 4:50 to help his team pull away.

The Purple Knights host American International College for a Senior Day contest on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
