Swarthmore Uses 9-0 Run to Defeat Muhlenberg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Behind a nine-goal run spanning the first and second halves, Swarthmore (9-4, 3-3) broke open a close game and defeated visiting Muhlenberg by a score of 16-10 on a warm Tuesday afternoon from Clothier Field.

Senior Annalise Penikis led the Garnet offense with three goals and three assists. Corinne Sommi, Emma Sipperly, Lizzie Kolln, Julia Denney and Lucy Whitacre all netted a pair of goals in the Centennial game. Seniors Nicole Vanchieri and Beth Martin both had solid overall games for the Garnet; Vanchieri tallied one goal, two assists and a game-best six draw controls while Martin added a goal, three ground balls and three draw controls.

Leading the defense for Swarthmore was junior Caroline Murphy, who finished with four caused turnovers and two ground balls. Reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week Michelle Ammerman made seven saves.

Stephanie Umbach led the Mules' (5-7, 0-6) offense with a game-high five goals and an assist.

Down 5-4 with 14:03 remaining in the first half, the Garnet embarked on a 9-0 run over the next 25 minutes that changed the course of the game. Penikis netted all three of her goals during that run, while Kolln also scored her two.

The run put Swarthmore in front 13-5 with the 22 minutes left in the second half, dashing any hope of a Muhlenberg comeback.

The win was the 199th in the career of head coach Karen Borbee. She will go for win No. 200 and the Garnet will continue its playoff push on Saturday against Dickinson. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
