Ohio Wesleyan Gets by Wooster, 14-13 in Overtime

Sophomore midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) scored with :01 left in the first overtime period to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday.

The Bishops had possession of the ball through most of the overtime period, launching 4 shots during the extra session, but sophomore goalkeeper Matt Beister (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) made a pair of saves to preserve the tie.

Eccles sent a shot over the goal with :13 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan retained possession, and with time running down, Eccles wound up and found the back of the net to end the game.

The Bishops sent the game into overtime with a 2-man up goal by freshman attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) with 3:36 left in regulation time.

Wooster had taken a 7-6 halftime lead on a goal by freshman attacker Mark Weschler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) with :21 to play.

Trailing, 8-6, early in the third quarter, the Bishops rallied with a run of their own. Freshman attacker Eric Turner (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) and sophomore midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) scored to tie the game, and senior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) added a man-up goal less than a minute after Fowler's score to give Ohio Wesleyan a 9-8 lead.

Wooster threatened to seize the momentum back when freshman midfielder Chris Curran (South Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth) tied the game at 9-9 with :27 left in the third quarter, but Eccles answered with a goal with :04 to play, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 10-9 lead heading into the final stanza.

Eccles added another goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter and freshman midfielder Phillip Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit) followed with a score to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 12-9, but the Scots rallied midway through the period, scoring 3 times in a span of 1:20 to tie the game at 12-12, then taking a 13-12 lead on Weschler's goal with 6:03 left in regulation time.

Eccles led the Bishops with 5 goals and 2 assists, while Johnson, Law and Zimmerman each contributed 2 goals and an assist.

Junior attacker Hisham Hassan (Winchester, Mass.), whose goal tied the game at 12-12, led Wooster with 5 goals and 2 assists, while Weschler finished with 3 goals and 2 assists.

Sophomore Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 9 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Biester finished with 11 saves for Wooster.
