Herons Edged by Vassar in Final Minute

Vassar College's Isabelle Goldstein scored with 21 seconds left in the game to push Brewer to a 10-9 win over visiting William Smith in a Liberty League game played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., this afternoon.

The Herons are now 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League. Vassar improves to 10-3 overall and 4-3 in league play.

With the game tied up at nine, each team had chances to break the tie late before Goldstein's eventual game winner. With about three minutes to go, William Smith senior Katie Dexter fired a shot on goal that was saved by Vassar goalie, Katharine Pula. With around 2:30 left in regulation Dara Davis sent in a shot that was rejected by first-year Heron goalie Marina Guigli.

Goldstein led Vassar with three goals. Michela Garrison added two goals and Davis and Phoebe Tzannes each chipped in a goal and an assist. Tzannes also won a team-high three draws. Jacqueline Palma caused a game-high four turnovers and picked up five ground balls. Pula played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with 10 saves.

Sophomore Katie Sipple led William Smith with four points on a goal and three assists. Senior Kathleen Ragan produced two goals and an assist. Dexter added two goals. Sophomore Rachel Hughes produced a goal, an assist, three caused turnovers, three draws and three ground balls. Sophomore Cat Gorman won a team-high four draws and senior Liz Seidel picked up four ground balls. Guigli played all 60 minutes in goal. She finished with nine saves and a team-high five ground balls.

The Brewers took an early 2-0 lead 3:39 in after free position goals by Goldstein and Zoe Ripecky. Dexter scored the Herons first goal of the game just under a minute later after a feed from Sipple. At 12:26, Marissa Reilly took a pass from Davis and found the back of the net to give Vassar a 3-1 advantage.

William Smith put together a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Sophomore Abbie West took advantage of a free position at 13:12. Just under a minute later Ragan took a pass from Sipple and scored her 28th goal of the season. At 15:16, Hughes put William Smith on top with her third goal this year.

Nicole Magney tied things up at four with 13 minutes left in the first. However, the Herons responded with another three-goal run. Ragan started it off with 12:52 on the clock. With 9:09 left in the first, Sipple scored her 21st of the season after a pass from first-year Kate Byrne. Dexter made it 7-4 after a pass from Sipple. Garrison scored her fourth of the year with 4:45 left in the first to cut the Brewers' deficit to two at the break.

Just 16 seconds into the second half, Garrison found the back of the net again this time off a pass from Phoebe Tzannes to get Vassar within one. Senior Marissa Potter made it 8-6 after a give and go from Ragan. The Brewers answered with goals by Tzannes and Goldstein to knot the game at eight. First-year Hannah Connolly notched her 23rd goal of the season after a quick pass from Hughes to put the Herons back on top at 9-8. With 6:02 left on the clock, Davis evened the score at nine with her 36th goal of the year for Vassar, and Goldstein tallied the game winner with 21 seconds on the clock.

William Smith held a 25-24 edge in shots and a 14-7 advantage in draws. The Brewers recorded a 25-21 lead in ground balls. The Herons were successful on 15 of 21 clears and Vassar finished 19 of 24 clear attempts.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, April 20, when they travel to take on Bard in another Liberty League contest beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Brewers host Union tomorrow in another Liberty League match-up at 7:00 p.m.
