Kahn Nets Four as UConn Sprints by Marquette

STORRS, Conn. (April 19, 2013) - UConn improved to 12-1 and remain unbeaten in Storrs with Friday night's 15-4 victory over Marquette in a nonconference battle. In front of the largest home crowd of the season, Lauren Kahn led the team with four goals, while Shannon Nee improved to 10-1 on the season following 30 minutes defending the net and only allowed two goals.

The Huskies took a commanding 7-1 lead within the opening twenty minutes behind two goals from Kahn and Alexandra Croft, while Carly Palmucci, Kacey Pippitt and Morgan O'Reilly each found the back of the net. Connecticut entered halftime with a 10-2 advantage after Marquette's Claire Costanza scored twice in the opening period.

Connecticut, who outshot the Golden Eagles 26-13, tacked on five more goals in the second half to cement a 15-4 win. Crofts, Pippitt and Emily Anderson each scored two goals in the game, while Katherine Finkelston had a team-high three assists. Anderson's goals were the first of the season for the midfielder.

After 52 minutes in goal, Sarah Priem was the losing keeper after six saves and 15 goals allowed.

Connecticut was successful in 10 out of 12 clears and forced 27 Golden Eagle turnovers with Shannon Kerr leading the defensive charge with three caused turnovers. Kahn and Kaitlyn Aldrich each added two caused turnovers apiece.

The Huskies will host their final home contest of the 2013 season on Sunday when the team welcomes No. 6/7 Notre Dame for a noon contest. The game will be streamed lived on uconnhuskies.com.

Fans are encouraged to arrive to Sunday's contest early as Connecticut will honor 12 graduating seniors as Kacie Lewis, Dorian Gilmartin-Dzitko, Mackenzie Rainone, Kelsi Tucci, Shannon Kerr, Liz Brown, Morgan O'Reilly, Chelsea Hauswirth, Kaitlyn Aldrich, Brittney Testa, Catherine Gross and Siobhan Wilcox will be honored.

STORRS, Conn. Claire Costanza's first career hat trick was not enough as Marquette fell 15-4 to Connecticut on Friday evening at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

Costanza's three goals led the Golden Eagles (2-13), while Kenzie Brown added MU's only other marker of the game.

Connecticut (12-1) was paced by four goals from junior midfielder Lauren Kahn, who ended the game with a team-leading 31 on the season. Three other Huskies also added a pair of goals, while Katherine Finkelston added a goal and a game-high three assists.

The Golden Eagles added a pair of goals in the second half after trailing 10-2 at halftime. Costanza scored her third of the game after picking up a ground ball near the 8-meter fan with 44 seconds remaining in the contest.

Brown scored Marquette's only other goal of the second half on a free position attempt with 22:31 remaining in regulation.

The Huskies notched the first goal just over one minute into the game as MU goalie Sarah Priem made a save, and while trying to corral the ground ball, swept it back into Marquette's net. UConn's Kahn was credited with the opening goal and added two more in the first half as UConn ended the first half with a 10-2 lead.

Costanza answered UConn's 2-0 lead to begin the game with Marquette's first tally on a feed from Jacqueline Borzillo. Borzillo picked up a ground ball near midfield on a UConn clear attempt and fired it into Costanza who was waiting by the 12-meter arc for the pass.

Costanza added MU's only other goal of the first at the 7:55 mark to pull the score to 7-2.

Kahn's three goals in the first half helped her reach 30 on the season for the third time in her career and her goal was her 50th point of the year, tying a career high.

Priem recorded six of her seven saves in the first half and Marquette held a 7-6 advantage in draw controls over the first 30 minutes. The Huskies also capitalized on seven failed clear attempts by the Golden Eagles in the first half.

The Golden Eagles return to action at noon CT on Sunday against No. 5/5 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
