No. 15 Stanford Uses 9-1 First-Half Run to Down Ducks

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 15 Stanford Cardinal beat the visiting Oregon Ducks, 15-8, on Friday evening in Stanford, Calif.

The Cardinal improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Oregon fell to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF with the loss.

The Ducks got two goals from senior Kate Cathell, who was playing in her first game since March 30, and junior Nikki Puszcz, and they led 2-1 with 18:09 remaining in the first half. But Stanford closed the first half on an 8-1 run to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

Puszcz just 16 seconds in to the second half to bring the Ducks within five. The 16 seconds marked the fastest a Duck has scored a goal to open a half in school history. The previous record was 22 seconds.

But Oregon could not pull any closer than five the rest of the way. Stanford won the second-half scoring battle, 6-5.

Stanford out-shot the Ducks, 41-14, and won the ground ball battle, 22-6. Junior goalie Caroline Federighi played all 60 minutes for Oregon and made 16 saves.

Oregon stays on the road for its next game. On Sunday, the Ducks play UC Davis in Davis, Calif., at 1:00 p.m.
