No. 11 Denver Wins Battle of MPSF Unbeatens over Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. In a battle between two teams that were undefeated in conference play, the No. 11 Pioneers claimed sole possession of first place and clinched a berth in the MPSF tournament with a 13-10 victory over Cal on Friday.

Sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) recorded five points off a goal and four assists for the Pioneers (14-1, 6-0 MPSF). Junior Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) scored four goals, while redshirt senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) and senior Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.) both had hat tricks.

"I'm really proud of our team tonight," head coach Liza Kelly said. "We beat a very good Cal team on the road. Both teams played hard for 60 minutes, but it feels good to come out on top."

The game featured seven ties and five lead changes in the game. With the game knotted at 8-8, the Pioneers scored three-straight goals in just over three minutes of game time to take an 11-8 lead with 13:13 remaining.

Cal (9-5, 6-1 MPSF) cut the lead to two on a goals at 9:26 and 6:13, but the Pioneers responded each time to seal the victory.

Senior Kate Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) registered four draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover, and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made eight saves, including six in the second half.

Paige Gasparino and Megan Takacs scored three goals each for the Golden Bears.

The Pioneers continue their road trip with a meeting at St. Mary's on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. MT.
