Mercy Falls to Assumption in One-Goal Thriller

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, Mercy battled Assumption in a non-conference thriller. With nine seconds left, the Greyhounds scored the winning goal to take home the 11-10 victory. With the win, Assumption improved to 9-7, while the Mavericks fell to 6-6 overall.

Assumption scored three goals very quickly -- all within the opening two minutes of the game. The Mavericks then went on to rip off four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. The first half was closed out with three straight Greyhound markers as Assumption grabbed a 6-4 advantage.

Following halftime, Mercy tied up the game over the opening ten minutes as junior Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and senior Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored.

The two clubs traded goals back-and-forth as the second stanza winded down. Down 10-8 with 7:42 left, the Mavericks found the back of the netting twice for the equalizer. With 4:33 left, senior Brittany Ott (Copaigue, N.Y.) netted a goal, while sophomore Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the game-tying tally with 1:50 left.

Then after both teams had strong chances to find the go-ahead goal, Assumption scored its 11th goal of the contest with nine seconds remaining in regulation.

For the Mavericks, Bub finished with three goals and one assist, while Tiernan had two goals. Junior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) had one goal and two assists. In the cage, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) stopped 13 shots.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Thomas Aquinas for Senior Day beginning at 3:00 p.m.
