Seahawks Drop CAC Heartbreaker to York

St. Mary's City, Md. St. Mary's finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season standings as the Seahawks fell short against York, 9-8, Saturday afternoon.

The win gave York (13-3, 5-1 CAC) the No. 2 seed while St. Mary's (9-6, 5-1 CAC) finished as the third seed in the 2013 CAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. York earns the first round bye while the Seahawks will host sixth-seeded Wesley College in a first round game on Wednesday, April 24 at 4:00 pm. Wednesday's winner will then travel to York for the semifinals.

Senior attackman Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) paced St. Mary's in the loss with two goals and two assists while junior midfielder Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) added a pair of scores and one helper.

Senior long-stick midfielder Dalton Yohn (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) came out firing for the Seahawks, scooping up the ground ball off the face-off and taking it down for the goal just 15 seconds into the start of the first period. Sophomore attackman Tyler Davis (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) responded for York with an unassisted tally at 8:30. Two minutes later, Love returned a one-goal lead to St. Mary's before Davis fed sophomore attackman Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) for a 2-2 game at 4:30.

Only goal was scored in the second quarter as Davis struck again to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead at halftime.

Hutson tallied a game-high four goals while Davis finished with two goals and two assists. Hutson picked up the eventual game-winning goal with 5:13 remaining in the game.

The Spartans edged St. Mary's in the third stanza by a 4-3 margin. Hutson and Davis joined forces again to put YCP up by two at 13:57. Love and first-year attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) answered for the Seahawks to even up the score at 4-4 at 11:30. Senior midfielder James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) sparked a 3-0 Spartan run before sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) picked up a man-up goal to cut the deficit to two.

D'Ambrogi completed a feed from Love to make it a one-goal game at 11:46 of the fourth period. First-year attackman Andrew Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) was involved in the next two York goals, tallying one and assisting on the eventual game-winner, for a 9-7 Spartan lead at 5;13. D'Ambrogi found the back of the net again at 4:46 and senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tallied an unassisted goal with 55 seconds left on the clock to pull St. Mary's within one.

The Seahawks' senior midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) won the ensuing face-off but St. Mary's could not hang on to the ball, turning it over to the Spartans. York killed off the final 37 seconds for its third win over the Seahawks in 18 tries.

Senior goalkeeper Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) turned away nine shots while first-year Caleb Abney (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) made 13 saves for York.
