Bonnies Close 2013 with Loss to La Salle on Senior Day

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. St. Bonaventure (6-11, 0-6 Atlantic 10) closed out its 2013 season with a loss to La Salle (10-6, 2-5), 15-10 on senior day. The Bonnies close their second consecutive winless A-10 slate.

Erin Thomas put the Bonnies on the board first but the lead would not last long. Just over a minute later, Melanie Sarcinello scored her first of the afternoon followed closely behind by Lauren McDermott to give La Salle a 2-1 lead.

The Explorers would make it 3-1 before LeighAnn Stauffer found the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season. However La Salle would respond with yet another 3-0 run to open up a 6-2 advantage with 10:31 to play.

Erin Thomas scored her 20th goal of 2013 to break up the La Salle run at the 9:45 mark. Senior Marybeth Madia picked up the fourth score of the day for the Brown and White just 22 seconds later. Erin Thomas would score her third of the half with 6:09 to play to make a 7-5 La Salle lead.

Mackenzie Jordan would net a pair of goals before halftime as the Bonnies traded goals with the Explorers down the stretch to allow La Salle to take a 9-7 lead into the break.

La Salle took control of this one in the second half. They held the Bonnies to just three goals in the second frame as they tacked on six more of their own to claim the 15-10 victory.

Mackenzie Jordan scored four goals in the season finale for the Bonnies. Erin Thomas added three while LeighAnn Stauffer tossed in a pair. Marybeth Madia's lone goal rounded out the scoring for the Bonnies.

Points leader, Jenna Schlagenhauf managed just two assists and no goals in her season finale. The Clarence Center, N.Y. native closes a stellar sophomore campaign with team highs in goals (37), assists (16), points (53) and shots (72).

Erin Thomas came on strong at the end of the season to finish with 21 goals and nine assists to account for her 30 points, second best on the team.

Prior to the game the Bonnies recognized their three seniors, Kellyn Savage, Marybeth Madia and Kelly Yaworsky. Marybeth Madia closed the book on her St. Bonaventure career with a 14 goal season. Kellyn Savage scored three goals in her farewell campaign while collecting a team best 29 ground balls and causing 20 turnovers, also a team-high. Kelly Yaworsky collected 17 ground balls during her final season and caused eight turnovers.

In 2014, St. Bonaventure will return eight of its top-ten points scorers. Six of those eight are sophomores or younger.

OLEAN, N.Y. - After spotting St. Bonaventure an early 1-0 lead, the La Salle lacrosse team responded with three straight goals and never again trailed in a 15-10 win over the Bonnies in the season finale for both squads.

Katelyn Fay (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) led the attack with a career-best five goals. Senior Lauren McDermott (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added four goals and classmate Melanie Sarcinello (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) added three in their final game in an Explorer uniform. Caitlyn Brostrand (Runnemede, N.J./Camden Catholic) drained two goals and Maggie O'Ferrall (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) added one to round out the Explorers' scoring.

The Explorers wrapped up their season with a 10-6 record to tie last year's record for wins in a season. They conclude the Atlantic 10 schedule with a 2-5 record in league play.
