Argos Prevail in Low-Scoring Battle vs. Whittier on Senior Day

BELMONT, Calif. - The Notre Dame de Namur seniors were spectacular, and the Argos won their fourth one-goal game of the season, toppling Whittier 5-4. Seniors Kevin Nguyen, Hunter Adams and Wil Chuch all did their part in leading NDNU to the victory.

Adams, the school's all-time goalie leader in starts, minutes and saves was at his best today, tying a career high with 16 saves. He made big stops throughout the game, including eight in the highly contested second half while also intercepting three passes.

Nguyen picked up the Argos offensively, scoring the first two goals and assisting on the third. He also had a team high six groundballs and won some very big face-offs in the fourth period. Chuch made his first start of the season on defense and was instrumental in helping the Argos hold their opponent to a season low four goals.

"We really appreciate the seniors hard work and dedication over the past four years." Head Coach Derek Pedrick said. "It was great to send them out with a win on their last home game."

The game started out slow for NDNU as the Poets capitalized on a turnover to net a goal in the opening minutes. After ten minutes of scoreless action passed Whittier tacked on another goal to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The Argos got on the board halfway through the second period when Nguyen fired an underhand shot from the top of the box to cut the deficit in half. Neither team managed another goal in the period with Adams making six huge saves for NDNU to keep it at 2-1.

The start of the second half was much of the same with four minutes passing by without a score. However with 10:53 remaining Nguyen scored his second goal of the game with a rocket shot on a pass from behind the net.

Whittier retook the lead at the 5:26 mark, breaking a 28 minute scoreless streak on a goal by Maxwell Jones. After both teams missed a few scoring chances, Nguyen found Jordan Wagner streaking towards the net in the final minute to tie the score at 3-3.

The game moved into the fourth still tied at 3-3 with both goalies keeping their opposition out of the net. With 7:16 remaining freshman Dallas Washburn took over, rolling towards the middle and sending a bouncing shot into the net to give NDNU a 4-3 lead. Exactly one minute later Washburn used an excellent one-on-one move to beat his defender and score top shelf to put the Argos ahead by two.

Adams remained big in net for the Argos, stopping the first three Poet shots on the period before the visitors broke through with 3:05 remaining. With the score 5-4 and the time winding down, the NDNU defense stepped up and held the Poets without a shot. Whittier turned the ball over with just over a minute remaining and the Argos were able to get the clear and run out the clock.

"It was a great team effort today. We really picked each other up throughout the game." Pedrick said.

Nguyen and Washburn each finished with two goals and an assist for NDNU while Wagner added a goal and Scott Alms picked up an assist.

The Poets held a 33-24 shot advantage but Adams's 16 huge saves were the difference.

NDNU closes out the season next Saturday night with the 3rd Annual Battle for the Bay against Dominican at Kezar Stadium.
