Boxers Close 2013 Campaign with Scoring Barrage at Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. Pacific closed out their 2013 season with the same aggressive offensive attack that has made them successful all season Sunday, pounding Olivet in the first half to easily beat the Comets 18-7 in women's lacrosse action at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

The Boxers benefited from a quartet of players who each scored three goals. Kara Smouse (Fr., Portland, Ore.) finished with three goals to go along with two assists. Amy Mayhugh (So., Tigard, Ore.), Melanie Niehus (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Carmen Taplin (Sr., Hillsboro, Ore.) all tallied three goals apiece. The Boxers (9-4) outshot the Comets 37-15 and held a 25-15 advantage in ground balls.

Kaitlyn Harper (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) and Kristen Dick (Sr., Auburn, Wash.) added two goals apiece while Katie Oliver (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Haley Korous (Fr., Cottonwood Heights, Utah) each scored one. Geri Murrell led Olivet (2-9) with three goals. Kaylee Liddle scored two goals while Taylor Guarnaccia and Mimi Garza scored one goal apiece.

Pacific opened the contest with an offensive flurry, scoring six goals in the first seven minutes. Mayhugh needed just 21 seconds to score the opening goal off a free position shot. Niehus and Dick joined the scoring parade to give the Boxers a 4-0 lead before three minutes had gone by. Harper scored her first goal at the 25:48 mark and Smouse tallied with 23:21 left to open up the 6-0 lead.

Murrell put the Comets on the board with her score at the 20:59 mark and Guarnaccia snapped a 12-minute scoreless streak for both teams with her goal with 12:22 to go. Harper followed with her second goal of the game with 9:24 left, opening a six-goal run to end the period. Niehus closed the run with her unassisted goal with 18 seconds left to give the Boxers a 12-2 halftime lead.

Olivet opened the second half by scoring three of the first four goals, but Pacific closed the contest by scoring five of the final seven goals. Taplin accounted for two of those goals, scoring with 4:10 left and exactly two minutes to go.

Brittany Hartmann (Sr., Portland, Ore.) earned her ninth win of the year in her final game, making three saves in the first half. Stephanie Carter (Fr., Applegate, Ore.) made one save while tending goal in the second half. Sarah Show made 10 saves in the loss for the Comets.
