Saint Vincent Clips Presidents

LATROBE, Pa. -- Saint Vincent scored seven times in the second quarter and held off a late Washington & Jefferson charge to defeat the Presidents 11-8 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bearcats (3-8) outshot W&J (4-9) 42-25 overall, including a 22-3 advantage during the second quarter. W&J was also hurt in the faceoff circle as the Bearcats held a 19-3 edge.

After a scoreless first period, SVC scored the first three goals of the game and the last three goals of the half to take a 7-2 lead at the break. Corbin Cole had two of the tallies.

W&J climbed back into the game with the first four goals of the third quarter, three of which were scored by sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy). That was one of three times the Presidents closed to within one goal, but SVC had the answer each time, including Nick Pensyl's goal with 2:14 remaining which iced the Bearcat win.

Cole finished with three goals for Saint Vincent, while Adam Gunter stopped eight shots in goal.

The Presidents were led by Angell's four goals. Freshman attacker Zachary Fredericks (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) added one goal and two assists, while senior attackers Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) and Tom Starr (Baltimore, Md./Friends) and junior midfielder Max Kroll (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) all recorded one goal.

Senior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) suffered the loss despite making 14 saves.

W&J wraps up its regular season in Madison, N.J., on Saturday versus Drew for the final Landmark Conference game of the year.
