Colonels Hold off Nor'easters in Finale

MILTON, Mass. -- Haley Carey and Ana Bottary scored just 31 seconds apart with a little over six minutes remaining to lift Curry to a 14-12 CCC victory over the University of New England in the regular-season finale on Wednesday evening (Apr. 24) at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, the Colonels (13-4, 5-3 CCC) claim the fourth seed for the upcoming CCC Championship, and will host Roger Williams University in the first round this weekend.

The Nor'easters (6-9, 4-4 CCC) settle on the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament, and will head to third-seeded Gordon College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).

Things were tight throughout the contest. UNE notched the largest lead of the 17-goal 1st half (5-3), before Curry built on a one-goal halftime edge by getting out to a 12-9 cushion with 20 minutes remaining in the 2nd frame.

Sophomore Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine), junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), and sophomore Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) all registered goals for Big Blue over the ensuing 11 minutes to level the contest at 12-12.

Carey netted her game-high sixth goal of the night with 6:57 on the clock, and Bottary followed with her third marker of the match at 6:26, to give the advantage back to the hosts, who held on the rest of the way.

Tavella paced the Nor'easters with four goals, while Newsome added a pair of scores and three assists. Sophomore Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) contributed two goals and two assists, and junior Johanna Currier (Holderness, N.H.) also scored twice.

Christina Wallis recorded seven stops for Curry to earn the win. First-year Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) made 13 saves for UNE.
