No. 11 Ducks Escape the Hawks

HOBOKEN, NJ- Hartwick kept it close with #11 Stevens but the Ducks proved to be too much as they came away with a 19-11 victory in Empire 8 action on Wednesday night at the Debaun Athletic Complex. Stevens improves to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick falls to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the E8.

Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) enjoyed a career game with five goals scored to lead the Hawks. Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) both contributed a pair of scores each. Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) and Conor McGoldrick (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) had one goal each.

Stevens was led by Harrison Dorne's four goals. Connor O'Shea, Nicholas Philippi, and Charlie Cronin all picked up hat tricks. Rich Dupras had two scores. Michael Maroon, Zachary Raposo, Matt Ferentini, and Connor Lynch all scored once.

The Ducks scored 56 seconds into the first quarter to take the 1-0 lead. Hartwick answered back when Hughes put one into the back of the net to tie the game with 10:29 showing on the clock.

After two more Stevens goals gave the home team a 3-1 advantage, the Ducks' Brett Incollingo was called for a cross-check to give the Hawks a man-up opportunity. Hartwick would soon cash in on the advantage when Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) dished out to Vaglica to make it a 3-2 contest. Stevens scored twice more in the quarter to go up 5-2.

A Maroon unassisted goal at 14:14 of the second frame increased the Duck lead to 6-2. Goals from Gropper and Vaglica narrowed the deficit to 6-4 at 12:27. A 4-0 Stevens run, however, gave it a little separation from 'Wick as they led 10-4 at 6:09. Gropper then scored his second goal of the game at 1:09 as Stevens went into halftime ahead 10-5.

In the third quarter, the Ducks went up 11-5 at 14:22. Scores from McGoldrick and Gropper narrowed the Stevens lead to 11-7 as 'Wick battled its way back into the game. After the Ducks tacked on two more goals, a 30 second penalty on Incollingo gave the Hawks yet another man-up opportunity and with just one second left on the power play, Dupuy fed the ball to Hughes who scored as the Hawks trailed 13-8 heading into the final frame.

The Ducks came out firing in the final quarter as they scored four times within a three minute span to surge ahead 17-8 with 10:49 left to play. Two quick Hawk goals, one by Gropper at 8:54 and another by Dupuy at 8:08, made it 17-10 in favor of Stevens. The Ducks would go on to outscore the Hawks 2-1 in the final 6:54 of the game to come away with the win.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) stopped 13 shots in goal for Hartwick. Matthew Deiner started in goal for Stevens and had seven saves in 50:14 of game time. He was relieved by Austin Boyd who picked up two saves in the final 9:46.

The Ducks had a 56-32 advantage in shots over the Hawks. Stevens had a slight advantage in ground balls, 44-40. Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) scooped up a career-high 12 ground balls for Hartwick.

'Wick won 18 face-offs to Stevens' 15. Hartwick was 2 of 7 on the extra-man opportunity while the Ducks were 2 of 5.

Hartwick will wrap up its 2013 season at home this Saturday against Alfred at 1:00 p.m. Members of the Hawks' senior class will be recognized before the start of the contest.
