Berry Outguns Centre in SAA Semifinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Blake Gwizdalski and Cory Hall both had five goals as Berry College defeated Centre, 15-13, in a Southern Athletic Association semifinal match on Friday night.

Berry (13-4) advanced to Sunday's championship vs. host Sewanee. Centre ended its year at 11-3.

Max Smerka scored four goals, as did Centre's Zack Connors.

BC led 3-1 after the first quarters and 6-4 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings held a 15-10 lead before the Colonels tallied three goals in the last 6:33.

Berry led in shots (33-31), ground balls (32-30) but trailed in face offs (16-14). Jordan Boreman made six saves in goal for the Vikes.

"It was a great game where both teams played their hearts out," said Berry Head Coach Chris Delfausse. "We look forward to playing Sewanee in the first SAA Championship game. I hope it's as good of a game as the first time we played."

The Vikings, which avenged its only conference setback with the win, had to battle the elements as well. There were two 30-minute delays because of lightning. Additionally, a deluge of rain caused a very wet and muddy field for the second half of the game.

"I also want to thank our track team for staying around through the delays," Delfausse said. "Their support really helped us a lot and made a difference."
