Bombers Perfect in E8 Again, Roll Past Hartwick

ITHACA, N.Y. 13th-ranked Ithaca (11-5, 7-0 Empire 8) blanked visiting Hartwick (4-11, 1-6 Empire 8) 22-4 Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium. The Bombers conclude Empire 8 regular-season play with a flawless 7-0 record for the second straight season. Ithaca will host the Empire 8 tournament Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5.

The teams exchanged goals to open the game, but Ithaca netted the next seven for an 8-1 lead at 4:42. Hartwick scored a second and Ithaca closed the half with a pair for a 10-2 gap at intermission. The Bombers outscored the Hawks, 9-1, during the first 18 minutes of the second stint, before finalizing all scoring, 22-4.

The Bombers have outscored their last five opponents, 87-29.

On senior day, Ithaca's six senior field players combined to score 12 of the Bombers' 22 goals, while senior Jess Worthman (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) recorded the win in goal having made one stop in the first 30 minutes of play. Tracy Rivas (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), Sam Whitney (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and Michelle Avery (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) scored hat tricks and Kim Armbruster (Boonton, N.J./Montville), Kaitlyn Hoffay (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Nikki Dahl (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) each tallied once. Rivas had a game-high seven ground balls and Avery had a Bomber-best four draw controls.

Accounting for the Bombers' other 10 scores were sophomore Molly Fischer (Aquinnah, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and freshman Taylor Purvis (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) with two goals each. Sophomores Delaney Gilson (Montclair, N.J./Montclair), Niki Standera (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and Emily Peters (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and freshmen Allison Runyon (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Ally Lates (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) and Riley Marion (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) all added one.

Eight Bombers handed out one assist each and nine recorded one caused turnover apiece.

Junior Brittany Romano (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield Central) did not make a save during the final 30.

Ithaca outshot Hartwick, 40-6, led the ground ball count 26-12 and held a 17-11 gap in draw controls.

ITHACA, NY Ithaca downed Hartwick in the Hawks' final game of the season on Saturday, 22-4. The Hawks close out the season with a 4-11 mark and 1-6 record in Empire 8 play. The Bombers improve to 11-5 and 7-0 and will host the conference playoffs next weekend.

Freshman Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) led Hartwick on the day with a goal and an assist. Junior Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), sophomore Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), and freshman Ally Naja (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) added goals for the Hawks.

Jweid would also add the team-highs for draw controls and ground balls. She grabbed five draws and scooped up three ground balls in the match.

Ithaca would break the ice 2:01 into the game on a Tracy Rivas free-position goal. Ference would even the game for Hartwick four minutes and 21 seconds later. The game remained a 1-1 affair for the next five minutes of action but the Bombers would take command with under 19 minutes left as they tallied four times over a 5:27 span to take a 6-2 lead.

Later in the half, three more IC tallies 3:33 apart would increase the margin to 8-1. Luce responded with her twentieth goal of the season on a free-position shot to pull the Hawks to within six, 8-2, before the hosts tacked on two more in the final 3:21 to take an 11-2 advantage into halftime.
