Kutztown Rally Falls Short at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. Kutztown wrapped up its season Saturday afternoon with a PSAC game against Slippery Rock. The Golden Bears overcame a four-goal deficit after the first half to come within one goal on two occasions during the second half of play but ultimately fell 13-9.

The Golden Bears (3-14, 1-10 PSAC) split nine goals between four players. Rosa Buffolino (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp), Gina Carmina (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive), Brielle Dickey (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), and Taylor Stone (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) each scored two goals, while Taylor Sandin (Freehold, NJ/Colt's Neck) scored one. Assists came from Buffolino, Carmina, Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley), Katie Feairheller (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), and Cara Lord (Media, PA/Penncrest).

Slippery Rock made the first strike, scoring the first goal of the game five minutes into play. Less than four minutes later, Dickey put KU on the board, scoring on a shot from inside the circle.

The Rock scored again just a minute later, but the Golden Bears tied up the scoreboard once again when Stone scored on an assist by Buffolino. SRU responded with four more goals to take the lead 6-2.

Sandin scored the third goal for KU on an assist by Carmina, scoring in her third consecutive game for KU. Carmina followed with a goal of her own, scoring the fourth goal for KU on an assist by Buffolino.

The Rock utilized the remaining three minutes of the first half to score two more goals, taking the teams to halftime leading 8-4.

The Golden Bears opened the second half with efforts to close the gap once again. Buffolino scored the fifth goal for KU on an assist by Beodeker, followed by Dickey scoring the sixth goal for KU on a free position shot.

The Rock put another tally on the scoreboard before KU scored two more consecutive goals by Buffolino on an assist by Feairheller, and Carmina on an assist by Lord. Feairheller's assist marked her team-leading and career-high 10th assist of the season, while Carmina's goal marked her career-high 17th goal of the season, to finish ranked third on the team.

SRU reached 10 before Stone scored the ninth and final goal for KU on a free position shot. The Golden Bears had four more shots in the remaining 13 minutes of play, but Slippery Rock maintained the lead and scored three more goals before the end of the game.

Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) led KU with four draw controls, and finished her season with a total of 23. Marisa Kalodner (Havertown, PA/Haverford) recorded two of KU's 10 caused turnovers to finish the season leading the Golden Bears with a total of 24.

KU goalkeeper JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) had nine saves, and led the defense with six groundballs. She finished the season leading KU with a total of 46 groundballs.
