Jacksonville Wins at Mercer, Earns Share of MAAC Title

MACON, Ga. - A strong third quarter help lead Jacksonville to a 12-9 non-conference win over host Mercer on Saturday. The Dolphins outscored the Bears 4-0 in what proved to be the decisive quarter to secure their sixth win in the last seven games and improve to 4-1 on the road this season.

In other action Manhattan defeated Marist 14-12 giving Jacksonville a share of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title. The Dolphins share the title with Marist at 5-1. Jacksonville is the No. 2 seed in next week's league tournament and will face third seeded Siena. Marist, the top seed, will face fourth seeded Detroit. The MAAC Tournament is hosted by Canisius May 3-5.

Senior TJ Kenary (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Rob Wertz (Lancaster, Pa.) each had three goals each to lead Jacksonville (8-4) which committed a season low six turnovers.

Despite being out shot 27-20 by Jacksonville, Mercer (4-8) took a 6-5 lead at halftime after outscoring the Dolphins 5-3 in the second quarter, including two goals within a 10 second span with less than four minutes to play in the period.

Kenary then helped awaken the offense scoring back-to-back goals less than 20 seconds apart just two minute into the period. The pair of goals were part of a 6-0 run for the Dolphins that extended into the fourth quarter when Wertz scored his third goal of the day to secure an 11-6 lead with 10 minutes to play.

The Bears answered the 23 minute scoring drought with three straight scores to cut the deficit to two (11-9) with 2:11 to play. Mercer then won the ensuing faceoff, but Jacksonville forced a key turnover to regain possession and set up Kenary with his third tally of the day with 46 seconds left to seal the win.

Junior goalie Pete DeLuca (Millersville, Pa.) made 12 saves and secured six ground balls for Jacksonville.
