Oswego Playoff Bid Comes up Short After Loss to Oneonta

OSWEGO, NY Oswego State (7-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) was eliminated from playoff contention Saturday afternoon, losing a tight battle with Oneonta (9-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) at a sunny South Athletic Field.

The Red Dragons looked control the game early, as Caroline Tulley scored two of her game-high five goals in the first ten minutes of play. One more Oneonta goal put the Red Dragons up, 3-0, 22:16 left in the half, but Oswego State's Erannan Shattuck (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) found Mackenzie Kjerstad (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) to put the Lakers on the board.

After another Oneonta goal, markers from Shattuck, Courtney Cosentino (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.), Kjerstad, and Esther Gabriel (Fr., Lancaster, N.Y.) put the Lakers up, 5-4, with under nine minutes remaining in the half.

The streaky scoring continued with Oneonta finding the back of the net three more times before Jayme McCreary's (Fr., Waterloo, N.Y.) goal with 37 seconds left in the half stopped the momentum, sending the Lakers into halftime down, 7-6.

Oswego State took advantage of an Oneonta yellow card early, as Gabriel scored a player-up goal at the 28:11 mark to tie the game at seven.

Scoring runs continued in the second half, though, as Oneonta found the net four more times before McCreary stopped the momentum again with a goal with less than 23 minutes on the clock.

Gabriel, Cosentino, and McCreary traded goals with the Red Dragons, bringing the game to, 14-11, with 14 minutes to play.

However, that was as close as the Lakers got, as goals from Shattuck and Miranda Czechowski (So., West Seneca, N.Y.) did not match six more from the Red Dragons, eliminating Oswego State from SUNYAC playoff contention.

Laura Grose finished the game with five saves and 13 goals allowed between the pipes for Oneonta. Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with six saves and 16 goals allowed for the Lakers, while Lauren Marois (Sr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) came off of the bench to make two saves and allow four goals.

Before the game, Oswego State recognized the contributions of its seniors, Shelly Bateman (Fulton, N.Y.), Danielle Citro (Miller Place, N.Y.), Stephanie Cronk (Endwell, N.Y.), Ashlee Engel (Webster, N.Y.), Marois and Michelle Ruskey (Sr., Deerfield, N.Y.).

The Lakers close out their season on Tuesday afternoon, battling Elmira, 4:00 p.m., at home.
