Late Penalties Doom HSC in ODAC Tourney Loss to RMC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Three unreleasable penalties in the last two minutes of the game doomed Hampden-Sydney in a 13-12 loss against Randolph-Macon in the ODAC tournament quarterfinals.

With the game knotted at 12-12 after a Nick Benhoff goal at 5:15, the Tigers looked like they would take the lead with 2:22 to go, but a Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) shot just in front of the crease went off the post. The Yellow Jackets secured the ground ball and converted on their clear. The Tigers were flagged for unreleasable two one-minute cross-check penalties at 1:35, and Tim Rowe scored at the 1:02 mark to put Macon up by one. On the face-off, the Tigers were called for a delay of game, giving the ball back to Randolph-Macon.

With 23 seconds left, the Tiers were called for another one-minute unreleasable cross check penalty. The Tigers were able to force a turnover with nine seconds left but quickly gave it back to Randolph-Macon as the Yellow Jackets secured the win.

The shootout got started less than two minutes into the game when Jason Andrews scored at 13:42, but Ryan Martin answered back just 11 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. Rowe and Justin Butler found the back of the net at 6:16 and 4:19 to go ahead 3-1. Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) and James Hughes (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek) tallied the next two goals to tie the game again at 3-3 with 42 seconds to go in the quarter. Alex Jesmer gave Randolph-Macon a 4-3 lead going into the second quarter.

Armstrong opened the second by scorching the net at 10:30 on the extra man opportunity, and Corey Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) found twine at 7:50 to give the Tigers their first lead of the game, 5-4, with 7:50 left in the half. Butler tied the game at 5:22, but Armstrong and Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA/Middleburg) posted back-to-back goals to go up 7-5 at the 3:18 mark. Nick Benhoff then tallied another last minute goal for the Yellow Jackets to draw within 7-6 at the half.

Andrews and Martin traded goals in the first five minutes, but Randolph-Macon would go on to outscore Hampden-Sydney by three goals over the remainder of the third, including a goal with 14 seconds to go to lead 10-8.

Hampden-Sydney came out on fire in the fourth as they started the quarter man-up for a minute. Armstrong posted an extra-man goal at 14:32 and found the back of the net for another EMO goal at 12:20 to tie the game at 10-10. Andrews responded with a goal a minute later to put the Yellow Jackets back on top, but Martin and Funk scored the next two to give H-SC a 12-11 lead at 5:24. R-MC wasted no time tying the game back up, needed just nine seconds for Nick Benhoff to score the tie maker.

Armstrong scored a game-high five goals, and Funk added five points on two goals and three assists. Mavromatis also contributed five points courtesy of a goal and four assists, Martin added on a hat trick, and Hughes posted a goal and an assist. Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Alpharetta (GA)/Trinity Pawling (NY) scooped a team-high eight ground balls. Ned Bowden (Crozier, VA/Collegiate) forced five turnovers with eight groundballs, and Austin Black (Dallas, TX/Plano) had four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Andrews paced Randolph-Macon with four goals and an assist while Butler posted three goals. Josh Merwin tacked on a goal and two assists while both Tim Rowe and Nick Benhoff had two scores. Benhoff also went 13-24 on face-offs. Thomas Smith made 15 saves and picked up six ground balls.

The Tigers end their season with an 11-6 overall record, making it their third time in four seasons with 11 or more wins and their 10th overall.
