#4 Stevenson Uses Big Q4 to Get Past #11 Shoremen in NCAAs

OWINGS MILLS, MD -- After playing from behind for more than three quarters, fourth-ranked Stevenson scored six of the seven fourth-quarter goals en route to a 17-13 win over 11th-ranked Washington College in an NCAA second-round game tonight at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs, who improved to 19-2 with the win, move on the NCAA quarterfinals, while the Shoremen finish their season at 13-5.

The Shoremen struck first when sophomore attackman Stephen Luck(Catonsville, MD/Boys' Latin) scored an extra-man goal off an assist from senior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) with 11:33 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mustangs evened things up just 26 seconds later when Mark Pannenton scored off an assist from Michael Crowe. Washington regained the lead when senior midfielder Patrick Coyle(Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored a man-down goal in transition with 9:21 remaining in the first.

The Shoremen's lead grew to three goals when junior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) with 6:42 left and senior attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) followed with a goal 15 seconds later.

Stevenson ended the Washington run when Billy Burgoyne scored off an assist from Jason Moffittwith 5:19 to play. Washington pushed its lead back to three goals when sophomore midfielder Kodie Englehart (Coronado, CO/Coronado) scored off a Cord feed with 31 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Stevenson scored the first two goals of the second quarter as Burgoyne scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Chris Dashiell with 12:51 on the clock and Nick Rossi scored with 11:33 left to trim the lead to 5-4.

Washington countered with a goal by junior attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) with 10:14 left and one by freshman midfielder David McBrien (Bel Air, MD/Calvert Hall) with 9:43 on the clock to extend the advantage back to three goals at 7-4.

Stevenson then ran off three unanswered goals as Peter Green scored with 2:02 to go off an assist from Pat Candon, Burgoyne followed with an extra-man goal off an assist from Candon with 1:35 to go, and Candon scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Pannenton with 38 seconds left.

Washington regained the lead before the intermission, however, when Lewis scored a behind-the-back goal in transition off an assist from Cord with 18 seconds on the clock.

Hughes opened the third-quarter scoring, giving Washington a 9-7 lead. The two teams then traded two goals each in a wild 67-second span as Green scored off aCallum Robinson feed with 13:41 remaining, Campbell netted a goal just nine seconds later, Burgyone scored off Dashiell feed with 12:48 left, and Campbell scored again 14 seconds later.

The Mustangs answered again just 40 seconds after Campbell's goal when Tyler Reid scored with 11:54 to play to pull Stevenson to within a goal again at 11-10. The score remained 11-10 until the 4:00 mark when Nick Rossi scored off a feed from Matt Tompkins to level the score at 11-11 for the Mustangs. Washington went back in front on a goal by Cusick with 2:45 remaining in the third to give the Shoremen a 12-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Crowe found the next equalizer for the Mustangs, netting the first goal of the fourth quarter with 10:07 left to even the score at 12-12. Freshman midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, NY/Westhampton) put the Shoremen back in front with a goal with exactly seven minutes left.
