DeLorenzo Named New Lacrosse Head Coach at Purchase

Purchase, NY (May 23, 2012) Assistant Athletic Director Francesca DeLorenzo is returning to her roots and taking the sideline, but this time in Panther gear. DeLorenzo has been named the new head women's lacrosse coach at Purchase College, Chris Bisignano, Director of Athletics, announced today.

"Francesca has been a tremendous asset to the department as the Assistant AD so I know she will find success as a Panther coach as well," Bisignano said. "She brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the program and we are confident that she will build our lacrosse team to be a Skyline Conference top contender."

A native of nearby Nyack, DeLorenzo was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter at Division I Marist College from 2002-05 as a midfielder. She was a three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic selection and two-time Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll member.

During her college playing career, the Red Foxes made four MAAC Tournament appearances, earning a spot in the championship game in 2003. She graduated with honors from Marist in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and later earned her MBA from Mercy College in 2011.

In 2009, DeLorenzo became the first women's lacrosse head coach at Mercy and lead the Mavericks to an overall record of 8-6 and 5-3 in conference play to conclude their inaugural season. During her four-year career, DeLorenzo coached four all-Conference players and one all-American. Her 2010 and 2011 teams earned IWLCA Academic Squad Honor Roll recognition for having a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In addition to her coaching duties, DeLorenzo was the Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Women's Administrator at Mercy, which made for an easy transition to Purchase as she takes the coaching reins once again.

"I am extremely excited to return to coaching," DeLorenzo said. "It is something I genuinely enjoy and I'm grateful of Chris for giving me this opportunity. I cannot wait to start working with this team and continue to build on what Coach Devon Whalen started."

In the role of assistant coach is 2013 Mercy graduate, Julie Darnulc. The former Maverick was a four-year captain and starting midfielder for the women's lacrosse team, and was part of DeLorenzo's first-ever recruiting class back in 2009.

"Julie is a natural fit for this program," DeLorenzo said. "As a player, she was always working hard and looking for ways to improve. She led by example and I expect the same from her as a coach. I know she will put her heart and soul into this team and help to build the program's success."

Darnulc, a native of Baldwin, NY, was an all-Conference and all-County selection while attending Baldwin Senior High. She also played for the highly competitive Long Island Yellow Jackets club team.

Throughout her career at Mercy, Darnulc earned many ECC Honor Rolls, led the team her junior year with 32 goals and 24 assists, and tied the program's single-season record with 56 points. She finished her Maverick career with 63 goals and 51 assists for a program-high of 114 points. She also totaled 73 ground balls and 20 draw controls over the four seasons. Darnulc graduated this May with a bachelor's degree in Homeland Security and a minor in Criminal Justice.

After only a day of being named coaches, DeLorenzo and Darnulc are already in contact with recruits. With the core of last year's roster returning and the addition of incoming players, the pool of talent is ever-improving as the Panthers prepare for their second season in program history.

"This team has a lot of potential and I am looking forward to developing our strengths," DeLorenzo said. "We are looking to make a name for ourselves in 2014."
