Detroit Mercy Signs Three Recruits in the Spring for 2013-2014

DETROIT (5/31/2013) -- The 2013 MAAC champion Detroit Titans have had a busy spring and, even with a championship under its belt, UDM is still looking for more talent. Head coach Matt Holtz has announced the signings of three players in Alec Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Catholic Central), Ben Gjokaj (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central) and Pat Masterson (London, Ont./Hill Academy). All three will join the squad as freshmen in 2013 as the red, white and blue look to defend its MAAC title.

Gilhooly an attackman - has earned three letters in lacrosse at Detroit Catholic Central and is currently one of nine finalists for the Warrior Sports Michigan High School Lacrosse Player of the Year, which includes two other Titan signees in the fall in Adam Susalla and Kyle Beauregard. Gilhooly was third team All-State as a junior and is a two-time team captain. As a senior, he has notched 37 goals and nine assists and has over 140 goals and 80 assists as a prep. He also received the Fine Art Academic Award of Excellence in 2011.

"Alec is a skilled player with great instincts around the goal," said Coach Holtz. "He can play either midfield or attack and will be a great asset on the offensive end of the field."

Gjokaj is a local product from Walled Lake Central and has lettered in both lacrosse and soccer. A team captain as a senior, he is regarded as one of the top faceoff specialists in Michigan holding his school's record for attempts and wins while starting his final prep season winning 39 of 44. He won nearly 75% of his faceoffs as a junior, helping the Vikings to their first winning season, and that came after a sophomore campaign that saw him post a winning mark of 64%. He plays club for 1763 and also made the blue chip all-star game in Rhode Island last year.

"Ben is a quick and strong draw man who brings depth to us at a position where you can never have enough talent," added Coach Holtz.

A defenseman, Masterson already knows the Titan program extremely well as he is the younger brother of Titan junior Tom Masterson. He has played for a number of box and field lacrosse teams, including London U-19 (field), London Jr. B lacrosse (box), Burlington Jr. A lacrosse (box) and is a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Jr. A lacrosse squad (box).

"Patrick is an extremely aggressive and athletic defenseman who could also see time at the LSM position," said Coach Holtz. "He has the ability to step in right away and compete for time and he fits very well into what we do defensively."

The three spring signees will give UDM a 12-member freshmen class as they join Kyle Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep.), Marcus Butters (St. Catharines, Ont./Denis Morris), Lucas Ducharme (LaSalle Ont./ St. Thomas of Villanova), Seth Horwat (Butler, Pa./Butler Area Senior High School), Matt Lee (Etobicoke, Ont./Everest Academy), Bryan Matney (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Kyle Pedwell (St. Catharines, Ont./Everest Academy), Adam Susalla (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) and Jason Weber (Whitby, Ont./Christ School Asheville, N.C.), who all signed with Detroit last fall.
