Fairfield Promotes Field to Associate Head Lacrosse Coach

The Fairfield University Department of Athletics announced three coaching staff promotions as well as the addition of several new staff today. Joachim Civico (field hockey), Laura Field (women's lacrosse), and Sarah Katinger (volleyball) were all promoted to associate head coach, effective July 1.

Civico is in his fourth season with the field hockey program, joining the staff as a volunteer for the 2010 campaign. He brings a wealth of playing experience, spending nearly two decades in England and Spain, and has coached in England, including leading the Wapping Men's 1st Team in a 19-game undefeated streak.

"Joey is very deserving of this promotion," said head field hockey coach Jackie Kane. "His technical knowledge of the sport of field hockey and his ability to transfer that knowledge to our players has made a direct impact on the success Fairfield University Field Hockey. I am happy he is being recognized for his efforts."

Field will be in her sixth season coaching the Fairfield defense, which has ranked among the nation's elite in goals against average and scoring defense the past several seasons. She enjoyed a successful four-year career with the Princeton Tigers, playing in the 2000 national championship game, before moving into coaching with an eight-year stint at Yale University.

"I've always had tremendous respect and admiration for Laura throughout the time I've known and worked with her," said head women's lacrosse coach Mike Waldvogel. "Laura's ability to communicate with the players both on and off the field has created an atmosphere which has allowed us to be the most successful lacrosse program in Fairfield history. She has shown her organizational and management skills to be exemplary. Her professionalism, intensity, and focus have allowed me to make a smooth transition to the women's game. I look forward to continue working with Laura in achieving our goal of a national power and regaining the MAAC championship."

Katinger is in her sixth season as a member of the volleyball staff and helped lead the Stags to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. A graduate of Bunnell High School, Katinger was a four-year starter at Providence, where she was a two-time All-big East selection and graduated with six program records. She began her coaching career at her alma mater and has also spent time on the sideline at Sacred Heart University.

"Sarah has been an integral part of the program over the past five seasons and I am happy that we can recognize how her hard work and dedication has brought us to our current level of success," said head volleyball coach Alija Pittenger. "We have been fortunate to have Sarah as has an exceptional rapport with the current players, in part due to her excellent recruiting skills, and juggles a wide variety of organizational duties."

Fairfield also announced the addition of four graduate assistants to the administrative staff. Emily Forese (athletic communications), Kaila Harpon (athletic training), Mary Alice Limperopulos (athletic marketing), and James Turiano (facilities/game operations) begin their assignments this summer.
