Paula Habel Named Assistant Lacrosse Coach at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Paula Habel, who has head and assistant coaching experience, was named as the new assistant women's lacrosse coach at Colby College.

Habel takes over for Kim Williams, who left after three years to become the new head coach at Richard Stockton College. Habel was a volunteer assistant coach last year for Colby head coach Karen MacCrate Henning.

"Paula has a wealth of experience coaching women's lacrosse and with leadership building," MacCrate Henning said. "She already has a connection with the team after volunteering last year and we are really lucky to find someone like her to help propel this team forward."

Habel has been a head coach during parts of the last eight years. Most recently she was the head coach at Bridgewater State University for the 2011-12 academic year. She helped Bridgewater win the New England Women's Lacrosse Association regular season title and the tournament championship to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Habel was the head coach at Emerson College for one year (2010-11 academic year), but her longest coaching stint was three years at Allegheny College. She helped Allegheny reach the North Coast Athletic Conference playoffs in two of the three years and led the 2010 squad to a team record for wins in a season (9).

Habel also had success as a head coach at Plymouth State for two seasons. She helped the Panthers win the ECAC title and finish with a 13-5 record in 2005. Plymouth State went to the NCAA tourney in 2006, won Little East Conference regular season and tournament titles, and finished 13-6 overall.

Habel moved to NCAA Division I Ohio University as an assistant coach for the 2006-07 academic year, but Ohio decided to cut the women's lacrosse program and some other sports in February 2007. Habel ended up as an assistant coach for Bowdoin College during the 2007 season.

Before her head coaching stint at Plymouth State, Habel was an assistant lacrosse coach at Stonehill College during the 2003-04 academic year.

Habel was a 2003 Cum Laude graduate of Bridgewater State and receiver her master's degree in educational leadership from Plymouth State University in 2009. Habel played four years of lacrosse and three years of basketball at Bridgewater. She was the NEWLA Offensive Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003, captained the team for three years, and was All-NEWLA all four seasons.

Colby has made the NCAA tourney the past six years and finished with a 13-5 record in the 2013 season. MacCrate Henning has an 87-26 record at Colby heading her seventh year with the Mules.
