COLCHESTER, Vt. - Following three seasons as the lacrosse head coach at Saint Michael's College, Ashley Hughes announced her resignation on Friday to accept the same position at her alma mater, Allegheny College, which is located in Meadville, Pa. A plan to fill the vacated position will be determined shortly. Hughes had recently become a full-time member of the Athletics staff by serving a secondary duty as the summer camp coordinator.

"I want to thank Director of Athletics Geri Knortz and the Athletic Department for the support over the last three years for the opportunity to grow as a coach and continue to create success within the women's lacrosse program," said Hughes, who was the head coach on a part-time basis the last three years.

"With the incoming first-year class, the program will continue to grow under a new head coach and a new regime. The current squad is led by a great group of seniors and captains with a strong work ethic and big hearts. I cannot wait to see the progress they make this spring. Saint Michael's women's lacrosse will surprise people this season. Thanks to all those in the Saint Michael's Community who supported the women's lacrosse program during my time here."

Under Hughes' guidance, the 2013 Purple Knights posted the program's highest win total since 2008, and the best Northeast-10 Conference victories figure in three seasons. Saint Michael's began the year 4-5, standing 10th in Division II in caused turnovers at that point.

Hughes' squad won two of its first three games in 2012, eventually beginning the year 3-3 while fielding a roster that included 11 first-year players. The Purple Knights finished eighth in the nation in caused turnovers per game while setting a school record with 170 caused turnovers. In her inaugural campaign, Hughes earned her first college coaching victory on March 17, 2011. Four of the Purple Knights' setbacks came by three goals or fewer.

Hughes came to Saint Michael's after spending the 2009-10 academic year as an assistant coach for both the women's lacrosse and women's soccer programs at nearby Norwich University, and working as a women's lacrosse assistant coach at Hartwick (N.Y.) College in 2009.

A native of Wexford, Pa., Hughes was a standout student-athlete at Allegheny before graduating in 2008. She played both lacrosse and soccer at Allegheny, and was a four-year starter for both programs. In lacrosse, she left as the program's all-time leader in career goals (125), assists (54) and points (179) while being named all-conference all four years and all-region twice. In soccer, Hughes led the Gators in goals twice.

"I look forward to moving on to a new and exciting adventure at my alma mater, Allegheny College," said Hughes. "Though it will sadden me to leave an institution full of warm communities and the wonderful city of Burlington, I am ecstatic about the upcoming endeavors as an Allegheny Gator."
