IWLCA Recognizes Nine Schools as Academic Merit Squads

The IWLCA has recognized nine schools as earning Merit Squad status for the 2013 season, with three schools honored in each division. Institutions were named Merit Squads by virtue of having one of the top three team GPAs for the season. In addition, all teams that posted team GPAs of 3.0 or higher were recognized earlier this year as Academic Squads.

In Division III, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges led all institutions in GPA. Piedmont College earned Merit Squad honors in their first year as a varsity program. Wesleyan was named a Merit Squad for the second consecutive year. Each of these three schools was previously honored as one of 87 schools that earned Academic Squad honors.

Tiffin University boasted the highest team GPA in Division II and thus earned Merit Squad honors. Regis University and Molloy College were both honored as well. Earlier this year, 22 teams, including these three institutions, were recognized as Academic Squads.

In Division I, the University of Detroit Mercy led all schools with the highest GPA. NCAA participant Jacksonville University had the second-highest mark, while American University was named a Merit Squad for the third consecutive year. These three schools were part of the 65 schools honored earlier this year as Academic Squads.
