Chowan Signs Five Recruits for the 2013-2014 Lacrosse Season

MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University lacrosse program announced the addition of five student-athletes for the 2013-14 season on Tuesday afternoon. Lasha Anderson, Sierra Burston, Rachael Cramer, Tyra Simons, and Charisse Wilcox will join the team this season and will add depth to the fledgling program.

Anderson is native of McDonough, GA and is a recent graduate of Union Grove High School. Head Coach Eryn McCaffrey commented, "Lasha had a great high school career at Union Grove and is very athletic. I'm counting on her to be a leader on and off the field and to make an impact in the midfield". Anderson was selected as Most Valuable Player of her high school team, and is the first lacrosse player from her high school to receive a college scholarship in the sport of lacrosse. She was also selected to appear on the Athletic Wall of Fame at Union Grove.

Burston joins the Hawks from Newnan, GA. The back-to-back state championship competitor (2012 and 2013), Coweta County All-County honoree (2013), and 2013 Defender of the Year should help the Hawks on the defensive side of the ball this season. "Sierra is a strong and aggressive defender. We will look for her to lead the defense this season and to quickly step into a leadership role at Chowan," added McCaffrey.

Cramer rounds out the trio of Georgia natives. The Etowah High School graduate heads to Chowan by way of Woodstock, GA. Cramer looks to see time in goal for the Hawks after making over 100 goal stops last season for her high school and being selected as the Most Valuable Defensive Player. Coach McCaffrey looks forward to Cramer joining the team, "I'm confident that Rachael will continue to be successful in goal. She has a strong background at the position but is versatile due to the fact that she has experience playing other positions as well."

Sterling High School graduate, Simons will also provide the Hawks some depth on defense. "She has a lot of passion for the game and for her position. I think Tyra will be a critical part of our defense due to her ability to position herself as well as her speed."

Wilcox rounds out the host of Hawks that will join the lacrosse program this season. The Syracuse, NY native competed for Corcoran High School and the Star Riders travel program. She was a four year starter for her high school team and was named Most Valuable Player her senior year. "Charisse is an all-around great athlete. She is versatile on the field and can play any position. We plan to have her run the midfield at Chowan, but she will be powerful on offense and defense!"

The Hawks posted a 2-12 mark in their inaugural season with wins over Young Harris and Methodist University in 2013. They take the field in the spring of 2014 looking to build a winning tradition in their second year as a program.
