UMBC Lacrosse Welcomes 26 Returners, 13 Newcomers for 2014

Head men's lacrosse coach Don Zimmerman and his staff welcomed 26 returning players and 13 newcomers in September as the Retrievers begin preparations for the 2013-2014 campaigns.

UMBC reached the America East championship game in 2013, winning a dramatic semifinal contest versus Hartford before falling to Albany in the title game. The Retrievers finished the campaign with a record of 7-8, won three of five conference games and earned a place in the four-team league tournament for the tenth consecutive year.

Many of the returning players visited Japan in the late spring, enjoying the cultural experience and winning all six competitions against Japanese national teams and universities. It was the third time that Coach Zimmerman had taken a UMBC team to Japan.

In August, alum Steve Settembrino joined the coaching staff and will work with the Retriever defense. Settembrino competed as a defenseman for the Retrievers from 2005-09 and was a part of four consecutive squads that competed in the NCAA Tournament. As an assistant coach, he helped guide Mercyhust to an NCAA Division II national title in 2011 and served on the staff at Binghamton in 2013.

"Our staff is pleased with the overall talent and diversity of our incoming players," said Zimmerman. "Combined with a solid corps of returning players, the 2013-14 Retrievers will be solid at every position and have the depth necessary to create a competitive atmosphere in both practices and games."
