Vermont Announces Lacrosse Captains for the 2014 Season

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Taylor Pedersen, Jake Remien and Vanessa VanderZalm have been named captains of the Vermont women's lacrosse team for the 2014 season. UVM head coach Jen Johnson made the announcement today.

"The team and coaching staff have voted three great leaders to serve as captains for this year's team. We are confident that these role models possess the qualities needed to guide our team towards our goals both on and off the field this season."

Pedersen was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team last season after finishing the year ranked second on the team in caused turnovers (20) and third in ground balls (26). The junior spent this past summer competing for Team Israel in the 2013 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup.

Remien is a three-year letterwinner for the Catamounts and will serve as a team captain for the second consecutive season. During her time at Vermont, she has played a key leadership role for the team both on and off the field.

VanderZalm was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team and Rookie Team following an impressive freshman season. She tallied 34 points on 28 goals and six assists and led the conference in ground balls per game (2.67). She also competed in the 2013 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup over the summer and helped lead Team Canada to the gold medal game.

The Catamounts return 91% of their scoring from a season ago, including top-scorers Sydney Mas (60 pts.), Jessica Roach (51) and VanderZalm (34). Charlotte Lyons returns in net after starting 15 games and posting a .410 save percentage and 12.39 goals against average in 2013.
