Texas State Announces Lacrosse Captains, 2014 Schedule

SAN MARCOS, TX In his second in San Marcos, Texas State head coach and 2013 Lone Star Alliance Division I Coach of the Year Michael Brand named four veterans as team captains and announced the schedule for the 2014 season. Seniors Jason DiGiovanni and Will Laurel along with junior Patrick Franklin and sophomore Blake Mattinson will captain the Bobcats during a season that features seven opponents from outside the state of Texas, five home games, and four games held at Texas High School stadiums.

"Although I made the announcement on the new captains, it was our players who selected them," Brand said. "I believe the team did a great job picking these four men to lead us in the 2014 season."

"These four men bring two character traits that we look for in captains. Not only do they bring a work ethic but they also have the trust of their teammates. Everyone knows what to expect when it comes to our captains, and these four create the standard by which others are judged."

DiGiovanni, who transferred from Penn State University, is a repeat captain and the president of the club. In 2013 he was 2nd in midfield ground balls with 40 and won half the faceoffs he took. A true two-way midfielder, DiGiovanni, an Austin TX. native, will look to lead the midfield unit once again.

Laurel, the starting goalie since he stepped on to campus, will be a captain for a third straight season. The Austin native statistically had his best season in 2013, carrying a .566 save percentage and a 6.3 goals against average. He is a two time all conference award winner and a team officer.

Franklin, a Dominican College transfer, led the Bobcats in ground balls in 2013 and also notched one goal as a defenseman. The junior from Plano is a two time all conference selection.

Mattinson, a sophomore in eligibility, burst on to the scene in 2013 leading the Bobcats in penalty minutes and third on the team in ground balls. The Austin native was named an all conference defender in 2013 and is the team's vice president.

The Bobcats take on four out of conference teams including three from the SELC. The first comes in mid February with a game vs Ole Miss in Dallas. Texas. State then travels to New Orleans to play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Series where they take on Tennessee and South Carolina. Their final non-conference game will be against perennial top ten ranked Chapman from Orange California. The Panthers come to San Marcos March 30th.

A new initiative this year for Texas State lacrosse is to play in front of as many high school lacrosse players as possible. Their first two games of the season against Texas A&M and Rice will be played at the two closest high school programs to San Marcos in Smithson Valley and Dripping Springs. The Oklahoma match-up will take place at Clark Stadium in Plano February 15th followed by the aformentioned tilt with Ole Miss at Parrish Episcopal in Dallas.
