Long-Time Brentwood (NY) Coach Bob Hoppey Passes Away

Leo Robert 'Bob' Hoppey of Setauket, NY, and formally of Port Jervis, NY, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at home with his family by his side. He was 81. Bob was born February 4, 1932 in Port Jervis, NY. Bob was a 1951 graduate of Port Jervis High School, where he was a four-sport athlete. He continued his education earning a bachelor's degree in physical education from Cortland College.

He is a member of the Cortland College Athletic Sports Hall of Fame, Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, and Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Bob taught physical education at Brentwood High School for over 30 years, where he also coached varsity lacrosse and led his teams to more than 300 victories, eight league titles and a trio of Suffolk County championships.

Hoppey's lacrosse achievements earned him Coach of the Year honors in the conference, Suffolk County and Long Island. Hofstra University presented him with its "Crosse" for outstanding contributions to the game of lacrosse in Suffolk County and also received the prestigious New York State Coaches Association Honor Award. He was a past president of the Brentwood Coaches Association and the Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Conroy Hoppey, sons Michael (Regina) and Timothy (Ellen), daughters, Kathleen Roberts (Larry), Sharon Lauer (Jim), and Ellen Cabana (Fran), sixteen grandchildren, and one great-grandhild.

A Memorial Celebration will be held at The Old Field Club in Setauket, NY on November 18, 2013 from 3:00-7:00 pm.
