Palm Beach Atlantic Releases Schedule for 2014 Season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ––– Palm Beach Atlantic head coach Chris Southard announced his team's 2014 season schedule today, featuring six teams ranked in the final 2013 Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division II Coaches Poll.

"Our schedule will prepare us for where we want to be at the end of this season," said Coach Southard, entering his twelfth season with PBA. "We expect to see some great teams along the way. Our goal is to take it one game at a time and be very prepared for the postseason."

The Sailfish, who were ranked as highly as No. 6 nationally last season, open the 2014 campaign at home on Wed., Jan. 29 against Florida Atlantic University. Palm Beach Atlantic met the Owls in last year's opener, winning 16-6, and are 3-0 in the all-time series.

Following an early-season scrimmage against Tampa (NCAA-D2), the 'Fish are in Gainesville for a game against the University of Florida on Sun., Feb. 9. This early season road test is one of three games against MCLA Division I opponents in 2014.

In the biggest test of February, the Sailfish head to Savannah, Ga. for the RIP10 Tournament. The marquee game of the weekend will pit SCAD, who finished ranked No. 13 last season, against PBA on Sat., Feb. 15. Last year's 11-9 loss to the Bees was the only blemish for Palm Beach Atlantic in the regular season. On Sunday, PBA will play Emmanuel College, a second-year NAIA program from Franklin Springs, Ga.

On Sat., Feb. 22, the Sailfish host Georgia Southern in an SELC South Region game. In 2013, PBA came from behind to grab an 11-10 win; they hold the lead in the annual series, having won five of six contests.

Palm Beach Atlantic hosts the fifth annual Sailfish Shootout beginning on Sat., March 1 against Northern Colorado. In total, PBA will play seven teams in the Palm Beaches over a three week period, having never met five of them previously. The action continues on Wed., March 5 against No. 5 Grove City. The Wolverines, a Christian college from Grove City, Penn., are expected to climb even higher in 2014's preseason rankings and carry over a host of talent from 2013.

On Sat., March 8, Palm Beach Atlantic reunites with their northeastern rival, No. 7 U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Bears and Sailfish have both beaten the other once: PBA notched a 9-8, 2OT win in 2011, while in 2012, USCGA used a seven-goal fourth quarter to sink the Sailfish, 15-14. This will be their last regular season meeting before the Bears advance to NCAA-D3 status.

PBA's fourth Sailfish Shootout game comes twenty-four hours later against No. 25 Stonehill College on Sun., March 9. In their only other match to date, PBA bested the Skyhawks in 2010's Sailfish Shootout, 13-11.

Following one day's break, the 'Fish are back in action on Fri., March 14 against No. 24 Lindenwood–Belleville. The Lynx (out of Belleville, Ill.) were a contender in the race for a GRLC Championship last season and are seeking to resume the hunt. On Saturday, PBA hosts the St. Edward's Hilltoppers out of Austin, Texas. SEU finished 2-8 in 2013.

In the final game of the 2014 Sailfish Shootout, Palm Beach Atlantic will play host to Central Connecticut State (Wed., March 19). The Blue Devils ended 2013 with a deceiving 6-6 record, having lost close games to three ranked opponents: Coast Guard, Stonehill, and Briarcliffe College (N.Y.).

Palm Beach Atlantic hosts the University of Central Florida on Sun., March 22. This will be the first meeting between the Sailfish and the Knights and PBA's second contest against an MCLA Division 1 program. Following that, the 'Fish host a non-MCLA program, Florida International, on Wed., April 2.
