Iona Announces Lacrosse Newcomers for the 2014 Season

Iona College lacrosse head coach Michelle Mason announced her 2014 newcomers. Overall the Gaels will welcome seven players to the program for the upcoming 2014 season.

Rachelle Serafini is a 5-7 midfielder from Fort Lauderdale, FL and St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

At Aquinas High School, she was a four year varsity player and two-year captain, earning All-American recognition during her senior season. Serafini was the squad's leading scorer as a junior and a senior. A 2013 All-District First Team selection, she was also a 2013 First Team All-County First Team All-Region choice. During her senior season, she was the MVP of the Orange Bowl Classic and named the Player of the Year by the Miami Herald. She was also named Player of the Year by the Sun Sentinel, leading her team to a District championship. Serafini's club team is Lax Maniax.

Serafini on Iona: "I'm looking forward to being a part of Iona's squad. The team's philosophy is honesty, integrity and hard work which I value a great deal."

Erin Pugh is a 5-10 midfielder from Wantagh, New York and Wantagh High School.

At Wantagh, she was a three year varsity letter winner and a two year starter. In 2013, she was recognized with the LIMLF Fran McCall Unsung Hero Award. Off the field, she was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. Her club team is the Long Island Yellow Jackets

Pugh on Iona: "Over the past two years I have gotten the chance to get to know the Iona Lacrosse team and staff and I can honestly say that I already feel at home with the team."

Kristian Wasdick is a 5-4 midfielder and defender from Hillsborough New Jersey and Hillsborough High School.

Wasdick was a four year varsity letter winner at Hillsborough and a two year starter. Wasdick won the 2011 Skyland Conference Championships in her sophomore year along with the Somerset County Championship. During her senior season, she was a team captain and the Hillsborough Defensive MVP along with a First Team All-Skyland Conference selection and selected to the All-Area First team. In 2013 she caused 21 turnovers, registered 45 draw controls and picked up 36 ground balls. During her junior season, she led the team in groundballs and caused turnovers, earning the squad's Unsung Hero Award and earned Second Team All-Conference honors. She also served as Hillsborough High School's Ambassador at the 2011 Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference. Wasdick's club team is T3 Lacrosse North.

Wasdick on Iona: "I looked at a lot of colleges, but when I walked onto Iona's campus and met Coach Mason and the players I knew this was the school for me. I felt completely comfortable with everyone and knew I wanted to be part of this team."

Grace Celona is a 5-7 midfielder from Melrose Massachusetts and went to Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody.

Celona was a four year varsity Starter and two year captain at Bishop Fenwick. She led the team in scoring in 2012 and graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer with 427 points. Celona was named a Catholic Central League All-Star all four seasons and was the Catholic Central Lacrosse League MVP during her junior and senior seasons. She was a 2012 US Lacrosse Women's Division National Team selection for Lower New England. She was also a recipient of the Outstanding Student Award in Social Studies, English and Algebra. Her club team was Mass Elite.

Celona on Iona: "During my visits to Iona, I noticed and appreciated the interaction between the team and coaches. It always seemed to be upbeat and positive. I also observed the support the students and faculty gave the team. It really made me want to become a part of it!"
