Colgate Named Three Seniors as Lacrosse Team Captains

HAMILTON Colgate head coach Mike Murphy announced Monday his three captains for the 2014 men's lacrosse season.

Jimmy Ryan is back for a second tour in a leadership position, and he's joined this year by fellow seniors Bobby Lawrence and Kevin Boyle. It's the first time in Murphy's Colgate tenure that all three captains are seniors.

"We've typically had a junior captain, and we had some excellent lead candidates this year as well," Murphy said. "Because the voting was so close for a third captain, we were going to just go with Jimmy and Bobby.

"But both of our junior candidates actually came to me and said Kevin should be the third pick, so that shows you what a great job Kevin has done leading his peers. He has gained the support of his teammates and the coaching staff, and I have no doubts that our senior leadership from Jimmy, Bobby and Kevin will be outstanding."

Ryan was an All-Patriot League first team selection last year after finishing with 23 points on 15 goals and eight assists. He compiled 13 groundballs and five caused turnovers, and was the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals including the game-winner in a 14-13 overtime triumph at Bryant.

"Jimmy does an outstanding job on both ends of the field for us in his midfield position," Murphy said. "He was a great captain for us as a junior along with Peter Baum and James Queeney. Now that those two guys have graduated, Jimmy will take on that lead role."

Preseason All-American
Lawrence also was an All-Patriot League first team choice last season and earned the team's Tyler Kopp Memorial Award as Defensive MVP. He posted 62 groundballs and caused 33 turnovers. Lawrence's goal count was just one, but it happened to be the game-winner in a 14-10 victory at Lafayette.

"Bobby has been a great player in our program for three years and we're excited for him and his senior year," Murphy said. "Bobby is a preseason All-American and will lead our defense once again this year, and we're excited to see him take on more of an overall team leadership role."

Boyle finished last season with 43 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers from his defensive position. He also scored two goals, including one to spark the Raiders' 10-7 win over Michigan at Citi Field.

"And then we're very excited that the guys selected Kevin as our third captain," Murphy said. "Throughout the course of the fall and in our training, his leadership has really come to the forefront and I'm excited for Kevin to wear the "C" on his chest.

"I've been very impressed with Kevin on and off the field in different leadership roles. He's a vocal guy, and all three of our captains have a different but effective leadership style."

Colgate opens its 2014 regular season with four of the first five games at Andy Kerr Stadium. The opener is Feb. 8 against Bryant in a 1:00 p.m. start. The Patriot League opener is Feb. 22 at Lafayette.

"We have a schedule that features five NCAA tournaments teams six if you count our preseason scrimmage against Albany," Murphy said. "My hope is that as we get ready for the new Patriot League, with the additions of Loyola and Boston University, our guys will be battle-tested."
