K-Hawks Take the Plunge for Special Olympics

The Rochester Knighthawks lacrosse team will support local athletes on Sunday, February 9th as one of the title sponsors of the 14th Annual Rochester Polar Plunge for Special Olympics New York.

The Knighthawks staff and their mascot, R. Thunder, will attend the event, which kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with registration. After the lead up festivities, costume contest, and awards, the plunge is set for noon at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte. Proceeds raised at the Polar Plunge will benefit the programs that Special Olympics provides to athletes and their families.

"It's honorable to support athletes that face challenges (in their daily lives), and help them reach their goals," said Rochester native and Knighthawks star Joe Walters.

As an added incentive to take part in the event, the Knighthawks are offering all Polar Plunge registrants one free ticket to their game on either February 8th or March 8th. Additional tickets for friends and family are just $15. The team will donate $5 from every additional ticket purchased to the Polar Plunge.

The Knighthawks will also donate the monies raised from their 50-50 Raffle on Saturday, February 8th to the Polar Plunge. The game is bound to be a top draw as the Knighthawks host the rival Buffalo Bandits in a 7:30 p.m. showdown at The Blue Cross Arena.

The following day, the Knighthawks will head to the beach to support Special Olympics New York. There is still time to register at www.polarplunge.net to go "freezin' for a reason." A minimum of $60 must be raised to take the plunge and includes a 2014 Rochester Polar Plunge Hoodie. For more information, contact Special Olympics at (585) 586-7400 or email mcrisona@nyso.org.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
