Stanford and Denver Top the MPSF Preseason Lacrosse Poll

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford is the choice to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse title, as determined by a vote of conference coaches.

The Cardinal is the preseason favorite for the fifth consecutive year and seeks to win its ninth MPSF title in 10 years. Stanford received seven of 10 possible first-place votes, with 2013 regular-season champion Denver receiving two and USC, in only its second season, receiving one.

Stanford returns 11 of its 12 starters and 96 percent of its goals (260 of 272) from a 14-6 team that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Stanford's Rachel Ozer and Anna Kim are returning IWLCA All-Region players and were among six Cardinal named to the All-MPSF team.

Stanford opens its season on Feb. 15 against visiting Ohio State at 1 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal begins MPSF play on March 5 at Fresno State and plays its conference home opener March 22 against Saint Mary's. The annual showdown with Denver is April 4 at Stanford.

The conference expands with the addition of first-year program Colorado. Also, Denver will play host to the MPSF tournament on May 1-4.

DENVER – University of Denver was picked second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coaches' Preseason Poll, announced Friday morning. The Pioneers earned 74 points, including two first-place votes, in the preseason poll.

Defending MPSF Tournament champion Stanford earned the top ranking with 78 points, getting seven first-place votes, after finishing 14-6 last year with a conference record of 6-2.

The Pioneers finished the 2013 season with an 18-3 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Denver went undefeated at home and had a perfect 8-0 record in the regular season against MPSF teams. DU topped Stanford 14-10 in the regular season last year, but fell to the Cardinal 7-6 in the MPSF Tournament Championship.

Denver opens its 2014 schedule against Colorado at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m. Additionally, Denver will host the 2014 MPSF Tournament from May 1-3.

EUGENE – Oregon was picked to finish fourth this season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason coaches' poll as announced by the league office Friday morning. The Ducks garnered 53 points in the poll.

Last season's MPSF Tournament champion, No. 20 Stanford, led the pack with 78 points and seven first-place votes. Last year's regular season champion, No. 18 Denver, trailed the Cardinal by just four points with 74 points and two first-place votes. USC was the only other team to have received first-place votes with one and came out with a 66 total points.

UO wrapped up its 2013 season 8-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Ducks' open their 2014 season on the road, beginning on Feb. 9 at Stetson followed by a neutral match against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 11.

Oregon's first match at Papé Field is against Connecticut on March 14 at 4:00 p.m. followed by its conference opener versus Fresno State at 2:00 p.m. the following day.
