14th-Ranked Washington & Lee Runs by Ferrum in Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team opened its 2014 campaign with a 16-4 victory over Ferrum on Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.

The Generals (1-0) recovered from a sluggish start that featured an equal number of turnovers (10) as shots attempted (10) in the first quarter.

The Panthers (0-1) grabbed the early lead when junior midfielder Nick Smith (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) found the net unassisted just 2:36 into the contest. W&L retaliated at the 6:16 mark when sophomore midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored man-up unassisted.

The Blue & White then took a 2-1 lead just nine seconds before the end of the first quarter when sophomore midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) scored off an assist from junior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy).

W&L shook the first game jitters in the second quarter to out-score the Panthers 6-1 en route to an 8-2 lead at the break. The Generals fired 18 shots in the quarter and limited their turnovers to just three miscues.

W&L began the second quarter man-up following an illegal stick penalty on a Ferrum player. Senior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) took advantage just 15 seconds into the period when he rifled home a shot off a feed from junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman).

Paglia then scored off an assist from junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) just 1:18 later, before Smith scored his second goal of the game for Ferrum man-up at the 8:21 mark. The Generals then closed the period with four straight tallies from four different people, including a goal by Lewis with five seconds remaining.

The Blue & White scored each of the first four goals of the third quarter, including a goal and an assist from sophomore midfielder Will Douthat (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry), to assume a 12-2 lead with 7:57 left in the quarter. Ferrum notched back-to-back goals 1:23 apart to make it 12-4, but senior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wis./Marquette University School) scored with five seconds left to make it 13-4 heading into the final period. W&L packed on three more scores in the fourth stanza for the final margin.

The Generals held a 58-19 advantage on shots and a 51-28 margin on ground balls. W&L also won 21 of 23 faceoffs behind senior midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who won 15 of 16 draws.

Offensively, Lewis paced Washington and Lee with a career-high five points on three goals and two assists. Dabir notched two goals and two assists, while Zanetis and Gebhard totaled two goals apiece. Wood, Paglia and Douthat each added one goal and one helper.

Three goalkeepers played for the Generals led by junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), who started and played the opening 30 minutes, making four saves with two goals allowed. Sophomore Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) played the next 23:12, allowing two goals with two saves and first-year Jason Cleary (Littleton, Colo./Mullen) was in net for the final 6:48, making two saves.

Smith led the Panthers with two goals, with junior attackman Ethan Wakefield (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and senior attackman Dylan Burdick (Denver, Colo./Mountain Range) each scoring a goal as well. Senior Damian Pulos (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) played all 60 minutes in goal, posting 20 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest.
