George Washington Rolls Past Howard in Season Opener

WASHINGTON Fifteen different players tallied goals as George Washington rolled to a dominating 24-7 season-opening victory over crosstown foe Howard on Wednesday at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

A balanced scoring attack helped the Colonials (1-0) defeat the Bison (0-1) in their first game of the season for the fourth straight year. GW was just one goal shy of tying the program's single-game scoring record of 25 goals. Junior Jamie Bumgardner led all scorers with eight points as she netted three goals and tied the single-game assist record for the second time with five helpers. Classmate Rachel Mia (3 g, 1 a) tallied four points for the Buff and Blue and senior Jordy Bathras chipped in three goals.

GW scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into action when Bumgardner connected with senior Lindsey DiAntonio, and the squad never looked back. The Colonials erupted to take a 6-0 lead in the eighth minute highlighted by junior Jenn Seitz's first career goal before Howard found the back of the net for its first goal of the afternoon.

GW out-scored Howard, 8-1, to close the half and took a commanding 14-2 lead into the break. Bathras scored twice in the first frame and rookies Bailey Forcier and Cassidy Shollenberger each scored their first career goals.

Sophomore Ellie Glasgow and DiAntonio netted the first two tallies of the second half to push GW to a 16-2 lead at 6:11 when the Bison went on a 3-1 run to pull within 17-5. The Colonials responded with three straight scores of their own to take a 15-goal lead at 17:54 and closed the final 10 minutes of the contest on a 4-2 run to solidify the win.

GW led Howard in nearly every category as it held a 25-8 advantage in draw controls, a 17-12 lead in ground balls and out-shot the visitors, 37-15. Goalkeepers junior Mackenzie Jones and Erin Long split time between the pipes as Jones set aside two shots in the first half and Long made four stops in the second.

The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Drexel. First draw in Philadelphia, Pa., is slated for 1:00 p.m.
