St. John's Season Preview - Red Storm Aiming High in 2014

QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2014) The St. John's lacrosse program heads into the 2014 season with 22 returning letterwinners and eight incumbent starters from a team that put together one of the best campaigns in school history in 2013.

The Red Storm's 9-4 finish (3-3 Big East) marked the most wins since program reinstatement in 2005 and the second-most ever for a lacrosse team at St. John's. The year was highlighted by a trio of exciting victories over ranked opponents, including one that reverberated throughout the college lacrosse world as the Red Storm knocked off No. 1 Notre Dame, 12-10, in South Bend on March 30, St. John's first-ever triumph over a top-ranked team.

The 2013 campaign was a special one for St. John's lacrosse, but the upcoming season promises to be just as exciting and twice as challenging with the Red Storm playing a stacked schedule of perennial NCAA powers. In all, St. John's will face three teams that participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, as well as five teams ranked in last year's end of season Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and a total of 11 squads that won seven or more games a year ago. The Red Storm's 2014 slate is made up of six home games, seven away contests and one neutral-site encounter.

Led by eighth-year head coach Jason Miller, the Red Storm is determined to take the program to the next level despite this daunting schedule, and lacrosse fans across the country will get to watch along as the Red Storm is scheduled to appear on national television up to seven times this spring, including five out of six home games and two marquee Big East Conference road contests. As part of a production agreement with ESPN, the St. John's University Television Network (SJU-TV) will produce five St. John's lacrosse home games this season that will be carried live in H.D. to more than 86 million homes on ESPN3.

Additionally, FOX Sports, the official broadcast partner of the Big East, has announced that the St. John's road contest at Providence will be part of the conference's 10-game spring sport broadcast package. The Red Storm will make its FOX Sports debut on March 29 in its conference clash against the Friars in Providence, R.I., at 6:00 p.m. in a game that airs on FOX Sports 1. St. John's will have a second road game televised nationally when it makes its first-ever trip to the state of Colorado to take on first-year Big East participant Denver. The Red Storm's April 12 clash with the Pioneers, the first meeting between the two programs, is scheduled to appear on CBS Sports Network at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

A trio of senior attackmen, Kieran McArdle, Kevin Cernuto and Colin Keegan, all return as starters for the Red Storm up front after combining for 94 goals and 70 assists in 2013 to form one of the most potent offenses in the country. Each brings a specific skills set to a St. John's squad that ranked fifth nationally in team offense at 12.46 goals per game last season and the three have developed a strong on-field bond since arriving in Queens three years ago.

McArdle is the most heralded player of the group as he is coming off one of the best statistical seasons in program history. A Tewaaraton National Player of the Year nominee last spring, McArdle won the Big East Conference "triple crown" as he led the league in points, goals and assists. He was a unanimous conference first team selection as a junior and finished the regular season as the national assist leader at 3.77 per game and second in the NCAA in points per game (6.54). McArdle was the 2013 Big East Attack Player of the Year before being named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) second team All-American, and recently was named Preseason Big East Offensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row.
